A Brooklyn cop was shot dead early yesterday in the Long Island home she shared with her boyfriend, a fellow NYPD officer... The brutal killing stunned friends of the young couple, who said Officers Sonia Garcia and Alexis Chaparro had planned to marry this spring...
Chaparro was questioned by cops for hours yesterday, but he stopped cooperating
about 4 p.m. and was released... Chaparro, 27, a Police Academy instructor and boxer, called 911 to report the incident about 5:15 a.m.... Garcia's uncle Francisco Hernandez told Channel 11 through tears, "It's incredible that he'd do that. He's crazy.. The fiancé's a crazy guy." Garcia's daughters, Ashley, 11, and Joselin, 7, were staying with relatives at the time of the shooting...

Cops yesterday put the heat on the NYPD fiancé of a beloved officer found murdered in the Long Island home she shared with him, saying he is still a prime suspect in the slaying but admitting they don't have enough evidence to charge him, authorities said... After being grilled by probers for several hours Saturday, he refused to cooperate further and was released without being charged. Still, police sources who have ruled out suicide in Garcia's death said Chaparro remained a prime suspect in the brutal killing...

...shock and despair continued to resonate from Long Island to Brooklyn, where the couple's extended family lives. Garcia leaves behind two young girls, ages 7 and 11. Cesario Garcia, the brother of Sonia Garcia's ex-husband, said the oldest girl already knows her mother is gone. The youngest does not yet understand. Their grandmother is taking care of them. "They are destroyed," Garcia said of the girls. "It gives me pain to see how the family is... Sonia was very, very humble," Cesario Garcia said yesterday... Chaparro's family declined to comment. In Brooklyn, Garcia's immediate family also declined to talk... "She didn't deserve to die like this," said one of Garcia's longtime neighbors in Brooklyn, Lydia Santiago. "She was a beautiful person."

[Excerpts] Brooklyn cops yesterday mourned slain fellow Officer Sonia Garcia - erecting a poignant memorial to her inside their Bedford-Stuyvesant station house - even as they grew impatient for an arrest in the troubling case... "What can they do?" said frustrated Officer Sean Jones outside the 77th Precinct station house yesterday, adding he believed city cops are now being "kept in the dark." Garcia's wake will be today and Wednesday at Ponce Funeral home in Brooklyn; her funeral will be Thursday at Blessed Sacrament on Euclid Avenue, also in Brooklyn. Inside the station house, fellow officers put up a memorial to Garcia with a basket full of flowers on her desk and a portrait of the slain cop in uniform... "Everyone loved Sonia. She was an outstanding officer, an outstanding mother. She was loved by her fellow police officers"... http://www.nypost.com/seven/10022007/news/regionalnews/bklyn_cops_mourn_colleague_and.htm
