Family reacts as tear gas and another device were thrown into the home where they say their brother, John Kellis, was barricaded. "We got word this morning that he shot his wife, accidental -and he was barricaded in the house," said Margaret Grimes, one of Kellis' sister. It was then three of Kellis' sister rushed to the scene hopeful at the time their brother would come come out alive. "Johnny please come out, we love you, and nothing is as bad as dying, come out and we can talk," said Grimes. According to Margaret grimes, one of Kellis' sisters, her brother was having problems with his wife. They had trouble, she had left, took the truck, and then we don't know what happened after that, said Grimes. Grimes also tells us her brother had issues with depression, but never thought he would be capable of anything like this. "Oh, it shocked us, I mean I just couldn't imagine him doing something like that, so I mean he was pushed to the limit, said Grimes... His family waited for word Monday that their brother and his wife were not hurt, but instead they learned the couple was found dead inside the mobile home west of Tyler... "I don't understand why he did it. I just can't understand it," Margaret Grimes said of her brother... Sgt. Gary Middleton said at the scene that his department received a domestic disturbance/welfare call from a family member that there may be a disturbance involving gunfire... SWAT team members fired tear gas into the home to gain entry. What they found was two bodies... Mrs. Grimes and her sister Carol Shanin said they loved their brother, who was a former Jacksonville police officer... "Everybody knew him as Big John, because he stood 6-7 and was a big man," Mrs. Shanin said. "He just had a way about him, and he was a good man." Mrs. Shanin said her brother and his wife had fought in the past, but it had never escalated to any violence, and police said they had never dealt with any domestic disturbances at the home. "His health was bad and he was recently told by the doctors he didn't have long to live," she said. Mrs. Grimes said another family member that talked to Johnny said he claimed he had accidentally shot his wife, but authorities would not believe him. "He knew what happened to ex-police officers and he didn't want to go to prison," he said. However, detectives said they are still working the case and did not comment on the possibility it was an accident and then a suicide... [Full article here]

Former Police Officer, Wife Killed; Family Says Accidental

"He told his son that he was trying to load the gun and she was trying to take it away from him and it went off and it was an accident. But that the police would never believe him that it was an accident. And he couldn't take the chance. He didn't want to go to the penitentary," said Carol Shin, Johnny's Sister. The family says the couple had been together 8 years and fought off and on. "Arguing and she would leave and then she'd come back," said Margaret Grimes, Johnny's Sister continued, "But this time." His sister's say over 20 years ago, Johnny was a Jacksonville Police Officer...   1. Funny, they send people to prison every day, and yet are literally scared to death of it themselves. Well, actually not funny... Kind of says something about how much they care for their fellow man as opposed to themselves.
