BURLINGAME - A former Burlingame police officer shot and killed a 26-year-old man at close range then killed himself about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento on Monday, authorities said. Morris Greenberg, 37, shot Anthony Dumont with a handgun during an argument inside a residence in Placerville, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. Greenberg, an 11-year veteran of the Burlingame Police Department, died after shooting himself in the head, said El Dorado Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan Golmitz. Greenberg worked for Burlingame from Aug. 12, 1996, to April 2, 2007, said Burlingame Capt. Mike Matteucci. He retired last year in “good standing.” Golmitz said the motive for the shooting was under investigation but appeared to be domestic issues. [Source]

A former police officer is suspected of killing another man in El Dorado County before turning the gun on himself. Morris Greenberg, a former police officer in Burlingame, allegedly gunned down 26-year-old Anthony Dumont when an argument turned ugly in Greenberg's driveway. El Dorado County deputies say the shooting happened in front of family members, including children. Relatives rushed Dumont to a nearby fire station in a pickup truck, but he succumbed to his injuries. "I could hear her on the phone saying, 'He's not breathing,'" said Mary Bozarth, who witnessed the incident. "An ambulance showed up but never left." Greenberg then reportedly turned the gun on himself, but survived the gunshot. "He seemed like a rounded, normal guy," said neighbor Brek Peterson. "He was a police officer, he had been injured." Greenberg was taken by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Hospital. He faces murder charges if he recovers. Deputies are still investigating a motive for the shooting but sya[sic] it appears to be related to a domestic issue. [Source]

ReplyDeleteMorris is still alive!!!
ReplyDeleteMorris Greenberg is not dead! The Examiner who posted this story was wrong! He is in policy custody in the hospital.
ReplyDeleteAnthony was going through a divorce himself. Shame on all of you who paint Anthony to be this young kid just walking in and screwing around with a married woman. His family and his wife's family are very hurt and sad over this. Have a little respect and maybe learn all the facts before judging and making comments that are not true. You can thank the media for screwing this up. Anthony was a good person, he did not deserve this. Nobody deserves to be murdered because of somebody else's selfishness.
ReplyDeleteClarification on Greenberg murder; Morris is no angel. The home he killed Tony at wasn't currently being lived in by either party and was close to being foreclosed on. Barrie had returned w/ Anthony, his sister and her husband to retrieve Hannah's bedroom set and some personal items. Morris had told her he had taken everything he wanted and that what was left was hers for the taking. She had called him the night before to let him know she would be going to the house and picking up some things so that he would please not go there.
ReplyDeleteWhen Morris arrived with Hannah in his car and was obviously extremely angry Anthony immediately got into his sister's vehicle to leave the scene, he was unarmed. That is when Morris approached him and shot him (two shots then returning to give a final shot to the head), then saying to Anthony's sister "I fucking killed your brother".
His sister and her husband fled the scene with Tony only because the home is in a remote area and they were trying desperately to save his life. The nearest fire station is about 10 miles from the scene of the crime. There was no phone at the residence and no cell service at the site.
Barrie ran from the scene with Hannah to call 911 from a neighbor's house- when she left the scene Morris was still standing in the driveway with the gun. When they were almost to the neighbor's she heard an additional shot go off.
Also, this had been a loveless marriage for years and Morris told Barrie he didn't care if she dated anyone, encouraged her to do so and they were living separately. Morris was also dating someone.
Morris had no right to show up and kill such a wonderful young man. If he is such a fabulous person why did he choose to do this horrible crime in front of his 8 year old daughter. It is unfortunate he wasn't successful in his "attempt", which is pretty ironic for ex-law enforcement. Anthony, Hannah and Barrie are all victims of violent crime.
I love how all these people will through their opinions around and not even have the guts to put their name out there. Tony was like a brother to me and DID NOT deserve to have this happen. To some the original situation might have been wrong, but at least he was happy. I hope Greenberg pulls through because dying would not be the kind of justice he deserves. Knowing Tony as long as I have all, Greenberg's lucky Tony wasn't armed or we'd be looking at a whole situation. If your a friend of Tony's PLEASE post something here. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to use your name. Let these idiots know how strong his family (and if you knew Tony you were his family) really is and we wont forget him.
ReplyDeleteI agree to the above comment. I have known Barrie and mo for many years, and it dosen't matter what was going on in there live's. you CANNOT just kill. Barrie actually is a very nice woman with a big heart. Just a terrible situation. I am sorry for all parties involved!
ReplyDeleteHow can you defend a man who was sworn to uphold the law and protect human life? How can you defend a man that willingly and premeditately took the life of another human being, a human being that was beautiful both heart and soul? How can you defend the man who was a POLICE OFFICER that committed a murder? As the daughter of a Police Officer and cousin to the victim I am truly appalled at those of you who hide behind your anonymous names and make statements about a former POLICE OFFICER saying he is the victim.
ReplyDeleteThe real victims here are Anthony and his family. Regardless of what everyone’s relationships were there should never have been a murder committed. Instead of writing catty comments what all of you should be doing is assisting the Dumont family anyway possible while they try to survive this tragedy brought into their lives. Theirs is an amazing family full of love and they deserve your kindness and sympathy not your immaturity.
Our hearts will forever be broken by what is completely a useless tragedy.
I too am a member of the Dumont family. I am completely disgusted by some of the comments that have been made. There is no defense for what Morris chose to do. He made a choice and will face his consequences. I can only hope they put him in general population! That would be the only true justice.
ReplyDeleteThe Dumont family needs support and love to make it through this tragedy. Anthony was to young to leave us. He will be missed deeply. This is a grief that I would not wish on my worst enemy.
Please set aside your differences and support this family.
I in no way agree with what Mo did and he will have to pay for the very, very large mistake he has made. There are many victims in this tragedy 1st their daughter; who has been exposed to things that as an adult I can not even wrap my mind around, my heart is broken for her a thousand times over. My prayers go out to the Dumont family in no way should they be going through this either. Mr. Dumont was involved in something, that probably not to his knowledge should ever have been involved in. My prayers also go out to Mo; just as it is hard to wrap my mind around what has happened; like to some people it is hard to wrap your minds around Mo being a good man. He was and I am sure inside still is a very good man who profoundly impacted the lives of my family in such good away it will not be forgotten. The course of too many lives have been changed due to the actions of adults, there are multiple faults WIFE,HUSBAND, boyfriend. Many families have sustained great losses due to this a son, a brother, cousin, uncle, a daddy, a friend it fills my heart with a great weight of sadness. Mr. Dumont did not deserve to die and Hannah did not deserve to see her daddy kill a man or shot himself; neither of them should have ever, ever been there. There is ultimately one person responsible for that!!!!
ReplyDeleteI too am a member of the Dumont family, This is a tragedy that should have never taken place. There is no way possible to understand the pain this family is going through because of a stupid decsion. My deepest heart felt sorrow and love go out to this family in their time of need. I cannot understand how you can defend a man who took another mans life and say he was a good person! Good people dont do these kinds of acts. This was a premeditated act on Morris's part and he should be punished to the full extent of the law. My heart goes out to all the family and his friends who have lost such a wonerful person.
ReplyDeleteI have only one question... If Morris drove up the driveway (with his daughter in the car) and encountered the move in progress - where's his car?
ReplyDeleteAll that's at the house is the white pickup and trailer loaded with a fridge.
Anthony was a great guy.
ReplyDeleteThis should never have happened, and its a great tragedy to EVERYONE that knew him.
Want to know what kind of guy he was?
Our 11 y/o daughters first comment when she heard was to say "I won't get any more hugs from Anthony anymore" and then cried.
Our family has only known him about 8 months, but he has had that much of an impact on us because of what kind of person he was.
Everytime I picture him, I see a smile. He was always smiling.
Anthony will be missed by family, friends, new friends, and I hope Mr. Greenberg gets whats coming to him.
I'm sorry for little Hannah too, this is going to impact her life forever.
I am Anthony's sister-in-law. Anthony was a very kind, loving, non-confrontational person. He was always friendly and always helping somebody out. He touched so many lives. My sister, father, mother and myself are very devastated (along with numerous family members and close friends). I can't even imagine what the Dumont's are going through. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeletewhy wont you let anyone post anymore?
ReplyDeleteI only stopped ONE post from coming to the comments section, because it was SO RUDE and SO CRUDE... and I would guess that would be yours.
ReplyDeleteI didn't post it because you went
too far.
I woke up this morning and there were two messages to approve. One is asking to be "filled in" on the marriage - a request for details.
ReplyDeleteThat made me reconsider the comments here.
Because someone was murdered, and because I can - I have gone through and tried to delete all the posts that blame someone or attempt to smear anyone. Those who want to do that will have to find somewhere else to do it.
If there is anything here that is still hurtful, let me know.
cloud_writer@yahoo.com
My dad just called me and told me what happened. I did not believe him at first, till he started crying. Anthony was a good guy. I knew him for several years. He was always smiling, and always willing to help. Anthony always helped me and my family whenever we needed it, even if it was stopping by and saying hi at his work.
ReplyDeleteI remember the last time I talked to him...I introduced my wife to him at his work and we talked for a few hours. I remember saying goodbye to him...but i never imagined it being this type of goodbye. That time, and everyother time i saw him will always be in my mind and in my heart. This man...this former "peace officer" that did this to Anthony...I hope he pulls through.
I am forever a family member of Anthony. He will be greatly missed. He was a great friend.
Rest in peace Anthony. We love you brother. You and your (now our) family is in our prayers always.
Does anyone know how Morris is doing?
ReplyDeleteFound this on another board:
ReplyDeleteTo all interested in Mo. He survived the gun shot with a lost tongue, and blind in one eye. The bullet blew off his tongue (permanently) and lodged in an eye socket. He will always need a feeding bag, and obviously will be deformed. He suffered no brain damage, and will go to trial fully aware of his actions. He wants to die still and is not in charge of his medical decisions.
If that's true it's just so devastating to hear. I am so so sorry.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where Morris is now? hospital? jail? and if so, what is the name of the institution at which he is being held at? Again i am so sorry for what he has done to anthony and his family. i especially feel sorry for his daighter, she will need years of counseling to get over or at least recover from these events that happened in front of her eyes. a terrible tragedy that should have never happened.
ReplyDeleteCurious - who wants to know?
ReplyDeleteI won't post location of Morris so no one need submit it.
ReplyDeleteTo the person who submitted Morris's location and to the person who wrote me personally about wanting to know where he is and why,
ReplyDeleteI just can't do that here.
I wrote A LOT MORE but decided to not go tossing my own personal thoughts all over this.
But my heart goes out to all the family and friends of both men.
Anthony worked for me and my husband at our gun shop in Placerville for the past three+ years. He was a wonderful young man - businesslike, courteous, loved fishing, hunting, darts and family. Didn't have a bad bone in his body. Unfortunately, he got sucked into a relationship that he should not have been in. We buried him yesterday. He will be missed by all.

ReplyDeleteThis is to BurlBlue. If your July 31st post is anything like your previous posts, i can only commend Cloud-Writer for not posting them. Say something that is intelligent, if that is possible.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I just heard about Anthony's passing Sunday and we are absolutely heartbroken. We were not close friends, but he touched our lives with his smile and his kind heart. When my current health challenges were over we had hope to get to know him better. He did not deserve this. We will be praying for all involved, especially Anthony's family and friends. How tragic that one person's choice to give in to evil as profoundly harmed so many people. May God's Grace and Peace be upon all who are still hurting.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't post two comments here today because of profanity / name calling.
ReplyDeleteIf the person cleans up the comments and resubmits it, I won't post it then either because I can already see what spit and poison you are trying to add to the conversation.
I understand you're mad but you should try to get a grip.
Is there a reason you arent posting new comments... ?
ReplyDeleteWho made you God? Nobody can give their honest opinion??? Go live in a country like Cuba where people would do anything to have freedom of speech....
ReplyDeleteHey Behind the BlueWall, Are you serious? Can't you see who co wrote the comment from Hannah? DUH! Barrie still trying to get the focus off of her. YOU ARE AS STUPID AND IGNORANT AS SHE IS..MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY TO GET A GRIP YOURSELF . WHAT? ARE YOU ANOTHER ONE OF BARRIES VICTIMS OR BOY TOYS?
ReplyDeleteI'm getting very angry profanity laced messages from potty mouth.
ReplyDeleteI remember when Morris came home from the hospital the day after he was born. He arrived on Fleetwood Drive in San Bruno. I saw him grow up. I knew his brothers and sister. We all played together. Sad story.
ReplyDeleteHas anybody heard any news on the trial?
ReplyDelete@ This point it looks like Greenberg has been able to postpone this trial for as long as he could. Now finally we are nearing the end, new trial date scheduled for early sep. 2011. Unfortunately the last 3 years will be time served. Doesn’t matter if Morris was a good man or not. That all changed when he took the life of another. Nothing would please me more to see this trial end. I know that will not bring Anthony back. We could at least have closer for the family. It is hard 3 years later to watch the Dumonts try to get back to their day to day routine with the trial still hanging over their heads. you will forever live in ower hearts Anthony, love ya brother. As for the Greenberg’s my heart goes out to the true victim in your family Hanna for no child should have had to go through that.
ReplyDeleteHAS ANYONE HEARD IF THE TRIAL HAS STARTED?

ReplyDeleteDumont and his brother had been helping Greenberg’s wife move her belongings out of the home.
----------
The district attorney has charged Greenberg, who is a retired officer with the Burlingame Police Department, with murder, plus a special allegation that he discharged a firearm.
----------
Murder charges were filed Wednesday against Somerset area resident Morris Green-berg, alleging that at his home near Sand Ridge Road Sunday he shot and killed 26-year-old Anthony Dumont, the supposed boyfriend of Greenberg’s apparently estranged wife.
Greenberg, 37, is in custody at Sutter Roseville Medical Center where he is being treated for injuries sustained after he apparently shot himself in the head moments after allegedly shooting Dumont, the El Dorado County district attorney said Wednesday.
----------
Dumont, the reported boy-friend of Greenberg’s wife, had apparently accompanied her to the home on Nutmeg to help move out some of her belongings, including a refrigerator found tied down in the back of a pickup truck left at the scene. It was apparently while they were loading up the truck that the deadly confrontation between Dumont and Greenberg occurred. Investigators have not provided any details of the alleged shooting. Either immediately before or after the event, Greenberg’s wife and young daughter reportedly ran to a neighbor’s house. After Dumont was injured, his brother drove him to the El Dorado County Fire Station 17, where he found an empty fire house. Normally staffed by two paramedics, the medics on duty had been called away to an accident. Chief Bruce Lacher of El Dorado County Fire said it is normal in El Dorado County for a station to be left unattended when the crew is called out, saying they “discourage people from bringing their emergencies directly to fire stations for just this reason. We want people to call 911.” Dumont was taken to Bones Roadhouse across from the fire station, where other medics on their way to the Nutmeg address were flagged down to attend Dumont’s injuries. The victim was pronounced dead in the parking lot at Bones shortly thereafter. Soon after Dumont was whisked away from the Nutmeg address, investigators believe Greenberg attempted to kill himself with a shot to the head. Medics drove him to Gold Oak School on Pleasant Valley, where a REACH helicopter transported him to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

All I can say at this point... is WOW! I'm appalled at how many people here are wanting to blame Barrie. She is as much a victim in this whole thing as Tony and Hannah are. Blame Barrie? Seriously? Was Anthony not a man with a mind of his own? Did she force him into that situation? If Tony was as wonderful and everyone says and he chose to be with Barrie, he would surely want his friends and family to be kind to her and not blame her. Would it honor him to blame her?
ReplyDeleteWhat high school did Anthony go to? My husband was dismissed as a juror today in this trial due to a hardship. I am just now reading about this case now because it hasn't been in the papers very much. My prayers are with both families. This was a terrible incident that damaged many lives.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I was called for jury selection. After filing out the questionnaire I realized This family had been my neighbors for many years in Somerset.(we moved), also I had worked with Anthony's mother.I pursued reading more about the facts. I must say my heart bleeds for this family for their loss. Especially Renee since she was with her brother, trying desperately to save his life.I can't even imagine how this will affected her forever.
ReplyDeleteIt seems it's been forever since we lost Anthony. But He is still missed every day. I knew him very well when we were yonger, and like so many others he knew, he changed my life. I pray for the family and those he Loved. And to Anthony's Dear Parents thank you for giving us such a wonderful treasure such as Anthony L. Dumont to cherish, even for a short while.
ReplyDeleteSo what is the status of the trial? My prayers are with everyone affected by this horrible event especially to Anthony's family and Morris's daughter, Hanah.
ReplyDeleteWho is paying for Mr. Greenberg's defense?
ReplyDeleteIt started up again today.
ReplyDeleteWe all are paying for that coward's defense. Besides lying and not taking responsibility for the devestation he has caused, he is not using his own money, but rather our money. What a guy!
ReplyDeleteGod bless the Dumont family. Pray for justice for Anthony.
Morris was convicted of 1st degree murder, this afternoon at 3:30
ReplyDeleteJustice has finally been served. 3 1/2 years later the system finally prevails. Hopefully now all of us that are friends and family of Anthony can get the closure we so desperately need. We love you and miss you brother.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the jury will never find out about what they weren't allowed to hear. If they had been given the respect and consideration to hear everything and then make their decision, the outcome may well have been very different; but that's not how the justice system works. Witnesses are sworn to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, but what if they don't? Anyone who knows Morris and Barrie know which one was telling the truth about what really happened that day. The jury is asked to listen to the witnesses, facts and evidence, but subjective decisions are made about what is important for them to hear. If you are entrusted to decide the rest of someone's life, you should be entrusted to hear everything before you make that decision. The Dumont Family and friends are happy with the outcome of the trial, and if it brings them comfort and closure, then that's a good thing--but justice? If someone goes to prison in part because of the dishonesty of a witness or witnesses, it may be very satisfying for some--but justice it is not.
ReplyDeleteTo "Anonymous": Your post seems to imply that an "innocent" man was convicted. There were definitely lies told during the trial, but they were not told by who you seem to suggest. You speak as though you know something, but clearly you don't. While I am not a fan of Barrie's, she was not the one who was lying - Greenberg was the liar. He never saw a weapon in Anthony's hand because it was not there - he lied. You are right, though, as the jury did not have all of the facts. But despite not having all of the facts, they saw through the lies the murderer told and convicted him. He never once showed any remorse. Neither did his family. I guess an apple does not fall far from the tree. After three and a half long years the murderer will have to face what he did: shoot an innocent, unarmed man by sneaking up with a loaded gun and executing him like a coward.
ReplyDeleteGod bless the jurors for having the courage and the wisdom to see through the murderer's lies and self pity. It does not bring our precious Anthony back, but it puts the coward where he belongs.
Kaylee--with all due respect--You don't know what Morris or his family feels, but I do. If he had expressed his feelings at any tine, the Prosecution would have said any remorse expressed wasn't genuine and would have used it against him. I can tell you also that his family feels great sadness for the Dumont Family because of the loss of their son, their brother, their uncle and all that he obviously was to so many people. You speak out of ignorance when you speak of the feelings of people you don't know and when those same people do not express their feelings to the Dumonts, it's because they don't want to make any gestures that might only add to their pain. Again, this has nothing to do with being a "fan" of Barrie's or not. I'm sure I knew her better (and for longer) than you and what was expressed had to do with my knowledge of her capacity for truthfulness compared to what I know of Morris's capacity for truthfulness. The opinions you expressed have to do with people you know nothing about. As I stated, the verdict is in and if it helps the Dumont Family, that's a good thing. If you want to bash people you don't know and that brings you comfort and happiness, then to each his own.
ReplyDeleteTo Anomymous: I do appreciate what you are saying, and with due respect, you are talking about your relationship with these people and how you know them/perceive them to be. What I am referring to is only the July 20 incident and the behavior that followed. Am I angry? You bet! My anger is toward the murderer and his behavior that followed what happened to Anthony. I don't really classify what I have written as "bashing", nor do I believe that I speak ill of people I don't know. And, believe me as I say this with all sincerity, there is no "comfort or happiness" for those who loved Anthony.
DeleteWhat I speak of is the fact that Greenberg lied - and this is a FACT not an opinion. What kind of person murders an unarmed man then blames others rather than take responsibility for himself and his actions. That is what bothers me deeply. He did not take responsibility for what he did. Everyone in that court room knew that Greenberg confessed to murdering Anthony, but it was evidence that was supressed. Can you imagine how difficut it was for those who love Anthony to sit and listen to all of the lies that were told? Heart breaking.
Clearly you are supporting someone you care about, and I don't fault you for that. As you said, "to each his own". But we have lost a wonderful, caring, loving man because of the actions of Morris Greenberg, who tried to lie his way out of taking responsibility for what he did. No matter how you look at that, it is wrong. The verdict was just and fitting for what happened. My "personal opinion" is that I hope Greenberg suffers for the rest of his life. that "suffering" in no way compares to what the Dumont family has suffered since July 20.
Well Said Kaylee
ReplyDeleteI am no longer going to post or read anything on this site. When people use it as a forum to talk about the feelings and opinions of people they don't know, it doesn't serve any purpose. Personally, I've never felt anything but horror at the loss the Dumont family has suffered, nor has anyone in my family. It doesn't much matter though--I'm sure the next posting would be that those feelings aren't genuine. It now appears that the site will be used to discuss "evidence" that was suppressed. That was true of the Prosecution and the Defense. That was my point in my previous post--juries should be given everything before being asked to reach a verdict, no matter which side it favors. The last thing I want to do is get into what evidence was suppressed and what wasn't. What would be the point?
ReplyDeleteThere was no confession in this case.
ReplyDeleteMorris Greenberg was sentenced today to 50 years to life without the possibilty of parole for at least 50 years. He showed no remorse and no one would speak on his behalf. This to me shows the burden of proof has been fulfilled. It's been almost 4 years since we lost Anthony to this tragedy, finally justice has been served. Hopefully now there can be some closure for his family and all of us who considered him a brother. We will always remember him for who he was and hope to turn this tragedy into something good for others.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about this case. How is Morris now? Is he still alive?
ReplyDelete
