The six-year-old daughter of Fort Smith Police Captain Larry Ranells is at home recovering from an accidental shooting Wednesday. Police say Blair Ranells found her father's gun and was handling it when it fired hitting her in the cheek. Blair underwent reconstructive surgery in Little Rock. The shooting has been ruled accidental, however the Fort Smith Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the incident. The police department says the investigation is standard procedure in a case such as this. [Source]

Blair Ranells, 6, was in fair condition Thursday after accidentally shooting herself with her police officer father’s department-issued handgun on Wednesday, according to a representative of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock... Police spokesman Capt. David Overton said the girl will probably undergo a series of surgeries. She shot herself in the left cheek with the semi-automatic handgun... Ranells is a firearms instructor and has always stressed firearms safety for himself and in his teaching... Sometimes a routine gets interrupted, and Ranells just missed a step in his routine Wednesday... ...Blair was in the den with her older sister Hennessey, according to a report by officer Joseph Armer. Hennessey told Armer she was working at a computer desk while Blair played beside a bed. Hennessey didn’t know Blair had gotten the gun until she heard it go off, she said. [Capt. David] Overton said he was unclear Thursday where Blair found the gun and why it was loaded. The gun was a Glock 27, a. 40-caliber, semiautomatic handgun that Ranells was issued as a backup weapon, Overton said. The gun does not have a safety but has a lever on the trigger that must be depressed before the gun will fire... Ranells is an 18-year veteran of the department, he said. He is the night shift captain, a firearms instructor and has served as the department’s training officer... Ranells is not suspended pending the outcome of the investigations, he said. Officers are issued cable gun locks, Overton said. With the gun unloaded and the magazine removed, the cable is threaded through the magazine opening in the grip and out the ejection port.
