...Blair was in the den with her older sister Hennessey, according to a report by officer Joseph Armer. Hennessey told Armer she was working at a computer desk while Blair played beside a bed. The gun was a Glock 27, a. 40-caliber, semiautomatic handgun that Ranells was issued as a backup weapon, Overton said. The gun does not have a safety but has a lever on the trigger that must be depressed before the gun will fire... Ranells is an 18-year veteran of the department, he said. He is the night shift captain, a firearms instructor and has served as the department’s training officer... Ranells is not suspended pending the outcome of the investigations, he said. A retired Los Angeles police officer paralyzed when his 3-year-old son fired his father's handgun while riding in the family pick- up truck in Anaheim two years ago filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the gun manufacturer. Enrique Chavez was off-duty when he was shot on July 11, 2006, while driving... His son got hold of his father's .45-caliber weapon while sitting in the back seat and shot him in the back... The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Chavez and his wife, Leonora, alleges negligence, strict products liability, breach of warranty and loss of consortium. They are seeking unspecified damages. The suit names as defendants Glock Inc., the maker of the weapon; the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, which sold Chavez the gun in 2003; Uncle Mike's and Bushnell Outdoor Products, which manufactured a gun hip holster for the firearm; and Turner's Outdoorsman... The suit alleges the safety on the Glock 21 that Chavez purchased is "non-existent or ineffective to prevent accidental, unknowing or inadvertent discharge"...
