[Excerpts] Police say a veteran Framingham firefighter pushed his wife to the floor during an argument at his home on Monday, and told his family not to call police because he feared losing his job. Bradford Smith, 44, of 85R Nicholas Road, a lieutenant in the department, was arrested at police headquarters at 10:18 p.m. on Monday on a charge of domestic assault and battery, after turning himself in. Smith pleaded not guilty at his arraignment yesterday at Framingham District Court and was released. He is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 18. Police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said an argument started Monday when Smith's son told him he wanted to play, raising his arms up to his father and accidentally knocking over a drink Smith had made. While his son began cleaning up the mess, Smith got into an argument with his wife. Smith charged her from about 30 feet away with both hands up and knocked the woman to the floor, Shastany said. When Smith's wife told her son to call 911, Smith reportedly said, "Don't call, or I'll lose my job," said Shastany. No one called 911 but Smith's wife reported the incident to officers in person at police headquarters, police said. Smith, who has been a member of the Framingham Fire Department for about 20 years, went to the police station and was arrested on the domestic assault and battery charge. He told officers he slipped and fell against his wife, said Shastany, who reported that Smith's wife disputed that claim. Framingham Fire Chief Ollie Gadson said he would meet with Town Manager Julian Suso and police before deciding on Smith's work status. Smith was on the job yesterday. "Depending on the severity of the charge and information and evidence police have found, I'll make a determination at that time," said Gadson, who noted he hadn't talked with Smith or police as of early yesterday afternoon. ...[Outgoing Fire Chief Michael] Smith said there were concerns, especially after Magri was arrested in June after a domestic dispute involving his wife. Smith said Magri handled the situation well, which impressed him. "We all knew about it, and were concerned about it," said Smith. "He's had a life-altering experience. He came in after the arrest, and he held his head high. He admits his fault, and he's been married for 24 years, and he's still married." When he was arrested in June, police said Magri punched his wife in the face, pushed her head into a kitchen counter, knocked her over a pool table and tried to choke her. Police said Magri pushed his daughter as she tried to help her mother, the teen told police. Magri said he and his family are together and happy, after the case was dismissed in December...
