Excerpts From Article "Vancouver couple target of Gig Harbor bullets," KATU News, By Meghan Kalkstein, May 16 2010:
A top Oregon school official and his wife are murdered, and police say their son-in-law pulled the trigger... This husband and wife lived in a quiet neighborhood tucked back off Vancouver's Northeast 162nd Avenue – a neighborhood where the couple even left neighbors notes when they left town. This time, however, Sue and Monty Multanen didn't tell anyone before the trip that took their lives... We spoke to the couple's son Eric by phone Saturday. He said his dad worked for the Oregon Department of Education for a number of years, and his mom was a nurse at one point. They were both enjoying their retirement years in their Clark County home before this tragedy. "You might say they were the perfect neighbors," said one of their Vancouver neighbors, Conrad Geiger. In this quaint neighborhood, homeowners said Sue and Monty were always helpful. "He was just a really super, friendly person," Geiger said. They said Monty spent most of his time in his garden. It's something Kenneth Creek watched grow as he lived next door for more than a decade. And when his neighbors would go out of town, Creek said Monty always brought over two items: freshly cut flowers, and a note detailing where they were going and how to get a hold of their two children. It's something they did every time, Creek said, except their most recent trip to Gig Harbor. He shows us one recent note, reading "Sue and Monty are in San Marcos, CA, Nov. 3-7. Home Saturday evening." Without a note, when Creek heard the news, "I couldn't believe it," he said. "I was sort of stunned"... Kenneth Creek said he can't believe his neighbors are gone forever. He still can't figure out why they left, this time, without leaving him a note. "It was a really unexpected thing for these people," Creek said, "because they were just nice people"...Excerpts From Article "Murder-suicide victims from Vancouver remembered fondly," Columbian, By Bob Albrecht, May 17 2010:

Saturday in an exclusive television interview with KBOI-TV Gary Multanen said his brother had been helping his son-in-law with money during the leave. Statement from wife of Pierce County Sheriff's deputy who killed his in-laws

The wife of a Pierce County Sheriff's deputy who killed his in-laws and then himself last month made a statement to the media for the first time since the fatal shootings.
Sara Myron read the following at a Fife barbecue and carnival fundraiser today for her family:
On May 14, 2010, my world and my children’s world was changed forever.
But even through this unspeakable event, we have felt the love and support from this community and our family and friends. Teams were formed immediately to navigate the maze of details that needed hours of attention--including family care, meals, and legal matters. We have felt completely surrounded and protected by our church family, Pierce County Sheriffs Dept., Tacoma Police Dept., my chef friends and more—there are far too many to list. There is a quote in the book When Bad Things Happen to Good People which says, ‘ “Human beings are God’s language.” That is, when we cry out to God in our anguish, God responds by sending us people.’ When I read this line in the book, my heart skipped a beat as I recognized that I have been living in the TRUTH of this statement.
I have been continually astonished at how this community has rallied around us, in a show of love and support—and through this “love in action”, we have the comfort and peace of knowing that God is with us, helping us in our time of need.
My children and I could not keep going each day without knowing that we have the prayers and support from YOU. I have witnessed only the small swirl of activity around me, but have been told of larger masses of activity of which I can only imagine. There are no words to express the gratitude in my heart for what everyone is doing for us. We will be forever grateful.
Our purpose is to keep moving, thriving and loving each other. We have experienced a great loss that is, at times, seemingly unbearable. But we will not allow this loss to disable us. Through God’s grace we can choose to embrace life as we wake up each morning, knowing that His mercies are new every day.
I thank you all for taking the time to come and support us here tonight. This overwhelming display of “love in action” will be imprinted on our hearts and will encourage us in our moments of sadness.
Because of your sustaining presence in our lives, we will move forward with confidence, hope and expectation, knowing that God will work in this-taking tremendous pain and loss; He will bring about a future of a good and blessed life.
