[TN] Whether Ex-Deputy Brefini got his job back or not I don't know - but he's been arrested again - on aggravated assault, kidnap

In 2006 it appeared that Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Brefini was losing his job for the second time. During his hand-slap sentencing after assaulting his wife and admitting using steroids, one of the articles stated "...Brefini could apply for judicial diversion to have his record expunged after successful completion of probation..." So whether he did get his record cleared and/or returned to police work - I don't know. It appears though that he has recently returned to jail on aggravated assault and kidnapping charges.

Grabbed 2 short articles on the recent dv incident allegations, and an article from 2003 about a struggle he had with his employer, and though these new dv articles say he has been a deputy for 7 years, the 2003 article refers to him as a FORMER Knox County Deputy - He must have lost his job and then won his job back. I checked the library database and the process wasn't tracked in the news.)...

Brefini admits assaulting wife: Former deputy gets nearly one year of probation; false imprisonment charge dropped

A former Knox County Sheriff's Office deputy who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic assault charge Wednesday is "very much ready to go on with his life," his lawyer said.

Eric S. Brefini was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days, which he will serve on probation. He was accused of assaulting his wife, Melissa Ward Brefini.

"He and everyone else involved recognizes this is a very unfortunate circumstance and not at all typical of Eric," said defense attorney Patrick Phillips. "The effect on his life and family relationships is far harsher than anything the criminal system can do."

Brefini, 35, entered his plea before Blount County General Sessions Court Judge Hugh E. Delozier. In doing so, a false imprisonment charge against him was dismissed.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reservist and eight-year KCSO veteran assaulted his wife March 18, according to the charge. He was also accused in a separate incident on March 22 of withholding her car keys and a cellular phone in an attempt to keep her from leaving their home.

Brefini last week tendered his resignation to the Sheriff's Office, KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley said Wednesday.

Delozier heard the case after Knox County judges bowed out, citing Brefini's long-standing position as a court security officer.

Conditions of Brefini's probation include continuing anger management and substance abuse counseling, Delozier said. He had previously admitted in court to using steroids.

He also cannot carry a weapon and cannot contact his wife without permission from a court. Melissa Brefini filed a divorce complaint March 30 against him in Knox County Fourth Circuit Court, according to court records.

"We feel that justice was done," said Sevier County Assistant District Attorney General Steve Hawkins. He handled the case after Knox County prosecutors recused themselves. "We hope he gets his life straightened out."

Melissa Brefini was in court but declined comment.

Delozier said Wednesday that Brefini could apply for judicial diversion to have his record expunged after successful completion of probation.

"There's not a thing you can do about what happened yesterday, but you have full control of what you can do about tomorrow," he said to Brefini at the conclusion of the 15-minute hearing. "I wish you good luck, and I wish the victim good luck in the future."
