[IL] Police Officer Amy Ruff said to have taken her own life - Husband's department investigates

Wayne Police Officer Amy Ruff, wife of  a DuPage County Sheriff’s Commander Jim Ruff, was found dead in their DuPage County home near West Chicago. According to news sources, neighbors said they heard what sounded like a gunshot about 2:30 p.m and about 20 police cars came to the scene around 3:30 p.m and spent close to 20 hours there. The Major Crimes Task Force of her husband's sheriff's department is the investigating agency and told the media that Amy appears to have shot herself but released no details. Wayne Police Chief Dan Callahan would not discuss details of Any's death, nor did the DuPage County coroner's office. "Circumstances around the death are still unknown... "The DuPage County Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation." Amy, mother of two daughters, had been with the Wayne police department for 10 years. [More info here]

This needs to be thoroughly investigated. Nobody here in Wayne thinks that Amy took her own life. She'd never do this, primarily due to her dedication to her children & job. Talk around town is that there was a "third party" in the picture and he's a cop too. Please find her killer!

She was killed with a shotgun. Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's strange she used a shotgun instead of her service revolver?

  1. Her husband's department investigated this? Is the investigation still open or has it closed?

WEST CHICAGO, Ill.— Police are saying very little about an investigation into the death of a west suburban police officer.

Officer Amy Ruff was found dead Monday in her home in the Oak Meadows subdivision, an unincorporated area near West Chicago.

An autopsy is being perfomed Tuesday.

Ruff was a ten-year veteran of the Wayne Police Department.

    >Her death is under investigation by the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force.

  4. Wayne, IL (Chicago Burb) female police officer found shot dead in her home
    TUESDAY, MAY 29, 2012
[Excerpts] Police are ruling this a self inflicted gunshot wound, sadly suicide... [DuPage County coroner's office] would not release how Ruff died, saying only that a death investigation was being conducted. No foul play was suspected... Ruff had been with the Wayne police department for 10 years, according to Wayne Police Chief Dan Callahan. He also would not discuss details of the death.

  5. Police: West Suburban Officer’s Death Appears To Be Suicide

[Excerpts] A west suburban police officer apparently killed herself on Monday in her home in West Chicago. Amy Ruff, 42, was found Monday in her home in West Chicago, according to the DuPage County coroner’s office. She worked as an officer for the town of Wayne. According to a release from the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force, it appears Ruff suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As CBS 2’s Marissa Bailey reports, officers from West Chicago and the DuPage County Sheriff’s office, as well as evidence technicians from Villa Park and Warrenville were on the scene of the death at the home on Wiant Road in unincorporated West Chicago. Late Tuesday morning, the house looked like any normal home, but several hours earlier, crime scene tape was up and police were investigating. Neighbors said Ruff’s husband is a DuPage County Sheriff’s deputy. The couple had two preteen girls who were not home at the time, neighbors said. According to neighbors, about 20 police squad cars, as well as ambulances, came to the block around 3:30 p.m. Monday. Crime scene investigators were at the home through the day and night. The neighbors said the family kept to themselves, but seemed like a normal, happy neighborhood family.

  6. I met Amy when she was a small fry when her father was the manager of the store that I worked at back in the early 80's. Very sad.

  7. I don't think she killed herself.

    1. It's so hard to know. Without facts we can't accuse.

One day I saw a crime show where a female officer walked into her department and shot herself at the front desk. Though I tend to be suspicious about these deaths, I always hold that incident in my recollections. It can happen. Without facts we can only have our feelings. :( I put these cases out here in remembrance and just in case something yet unsaid still needs to be said, or something unrevealed still may come to light.
