Schmitz told investigators that while he was doing laundry in the basement, his son approached him with the hunting knife. Authorities said the son was demanding the return of a Blackberry phone, and advancing towards his father in a menacing manner. According to the lieutenant's story, which the DA says physical evidence supports, the son swung at his father, which caused the older man to slip and fall to the floor. When Stephen stood over his father and prepared to stab him, the police officer said he drew his .45 caliber Glock and shot him twice in the chest.

Read more: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/PHI-Hatfield-Township-Officer-Who-Shot-Son-Cleared-of-Wrongdoing.html#ixzz3MpfaeWgu
Follow us: @nbcphiladelphia on Twitter | nbcphiladelphia on Facebook

,,,This cop is doing wash and has his Glock on him? Was the kid killed on the lawn...or in the home? Not a mention about the relationship between the kid and his father and general comments about mental illness. What was the cause of his mental illness. I'd bet the family refused to allow the release of the son's mental health records. Depression and anxiety are typical resppnses to abuse. Cps abusing their kids is prevalent. I am sure there is much more to this story. I lived with a cop who terrorized, beat and abused me. Each time the police came, it was one of these stories that he gave them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11646417.post-73548932741947030672011-07-09T19:28:50.226-07:002011-07-09T19:28:50.226-07:00Hatfield Township Officer Who Shot Son Cleared of ...Hatfield Township Officer Who Shot Son Cleared of Wrongdoing
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/125268549.htmlBehind The Blue Wallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04429113203939514642noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11646417.post-59590262170453443312011-07-09T11:46:43.555-07:002011-07-09T11:46:43.555-07:00"I really am not accusing."

In the case of Eric, I get every public indication that the police are investigating. That clears Eric if he did nothing wrong. In contrast, many cases are closed at the scene - like Brian Macias' appeared to be. That leaves shadows and questions. I would like to see the depth of investigation not be arbitrary or optional. When there is a family homicide I would like to see all cases fully investigated, and when there is an officer involved, a deliberate procedure to not treat the case differently. If Eric had to do it - there will still be people who say he didn't. That's life. What matters are the facts. I hesitate to say how sorry I am that all of this happened while at the same time posting something that I'm sure gives irritation. I do mean from the center of my heart though that I am sorry for the family and friends for their loss of Stephen and their pain.

From their point of view this could not be any more PERSONAL. From my point of view I see it over and over so have to ask about patterns. That helps individuals hopefully in the long run. Not Stephen. Not Eric. But maybe someone down the road in the future.Behind The Blue Wallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04429113203939514642noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11646417.post-91152771933273098922011-06-24T05:25:23.692-07:002011-06-24T05:25:23.692-07:00I don't disagree with the facts that this type...I don't disagree with the facts that this type of abuse and violence exists.
BUT in this case you are wrong.
I have known Eric Schmitz for many years and he would not have taken the actions he did without believing he was in grave danger. He has been an officer for 30 years and has NEVER fired his gun except at target practice.
He is a man who loves his children and I can't imagine what it would have taken for him to do what he did, not only as an officer of the law, but especially as a parent.
Some thing went very wrong and the entire family is paying a heavy cost because of this death.
Stephen lost his life, his siblings lost a brother and his parents lost their youngest child.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
