Vue is being held on $500,000 bail.

Vue had been placed on administrative leave by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department while they investigated him in connection with the October 15 murder of Lo, and authorities terminated his employment on Monday.

Vue has been fired after their investigation concluded that he had violated department procedures, according to Sheriff John McGinnis. Sources say that Vu used a county computer to search for personal information about Steve Lo before he was murdered outside his home, something Sheriff McGinnis would not confirm.

"Issues developed in the course of the administrative investigation, and his conduct… put us in a position where the right thing to do was for me to terminate him as a deputy sheriff," Sheriff McGinnis said.

At Vue's court appearance Monday, his defense attorney, Pa Lai Lee, invoked Vue's right to a speedy trial and also requested a hearing to have his bail reduced.

"The fact that my client has an illegal firearm, other than that there is no evidence tying him to [Lo's] murder or any murder," Lee said.

Sources say Vue may have a legitimate alibi that places him someplace other than the crime scene where the murder was committed, but defense attorney and analyst Ken Rosenfeld says police are building a bigger case against the former deputy.

"They're not really concerned about the guns here, in my opinion," Rosenfeld said. "They think there's something much larger here and it's linked to the homicide."

Sources called Vue a suspected "principal" to the crime; he could be charged with murder even if he didn't pull the trigger. Rosenfeld said authorities most likely arrested Vue on the weapons charge because they may not yet have the evidence to charge him with murder, or at least may be unwilling to share it.

Forcing a speedy trial would force police to show their hand, Rosenfeld said. Vue's attorney believes "they're rushing through this process, and in order to protect her client she's not going to waive time," he said.

"It's a pretty dangerous strategy," Rosenfeld added.

If Vue's bail is reduced and is able to bond out of prison, Rosenfeld thinks police would act quickly to charge him with something else.

"I think if he was out he'd be back in a very short period of time," he said. "They think he's good on a homicide, and they're not going to let that go."

http://cbs13.com/local/chu.vue.pleads.2.850004.htmlAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
