FUNERAL HELD FOR DEKALB CO. DEPUTY'S SLAIN WIFE
MyFox Atlanta, GA, FOX 5 Atlanta WAGA
Reported By: Craig Bell
14 Jun 2008
The wife of a DeKalb County sheriff's deputy was laid to rest Saturday. Linda Yancey was shot and killed in her Stone Mountain home Monday. Yancey's husband said her killer was a day laborer he hired for yard work. The pain and sadness was at times obvious as mourners exited the funeral of DeKalb Co. Detention officer Linda Yancey at Ray of Hope Church in Decatur Saturday. Yancey was killed Monday when her husband, DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy Derrick Yancey, said a day laborer shot her multiple times during an attempted robbery. The laborer was later shot and killed by Derrick Yancey. For life long friends Sherri and Janice Thompson, the hurt and shock of Yancey's death was a heavy load. "It's killing me. It's really, really hurting. I'm just sorry to see her go," said Thompson. Both the Thompson sisters said Yancey was a great friend. "She always had something wonderful to say to someone and she always made you feel loved," said Thompson. DeKalb county police are handling the homicide investigation. Police Chief Terrell Bolton said the case was far from closed and no one had been ruled out as a suspect. The Thompson sisters said no one at Saturday's funeral was focused on the police investigation. Their focus was strictly on Yancey's life and memory. "She's a good person and I know she's in a better place now. She's going to be missed," said Thompson.

EXCERPTS:
...Thanks for being a classmate and a poole creeker to the Thomas family forever your friend... To see a picture of Linda tells you of her Spirit, to see her Smile tells you of her heart, know that how she lived will grant her Eternity, and she will be with you all forever. Her leaving only ensures that she is doing what she she has always done, setting the path. GOD loves all and he will Guide and Strengthen you... Linda always greeted me with a smile. I worked with Linda for over ten years... Linda was a wonderful person, and one of the most professional and polite officer that had ever worked for me. I thank God for allowing me to speak with her and the family recently before her untimely death. I will never forget that beautiful smile of hers, and her charming personality. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16... This difficult loss has left us with many questions unanswered. I've been blessed with knowing Linda all of my life. I'm sure she has touched many lives in many ways through that genuwine smile. We know our Father makes no mistakes. Be encouraged and trust in him, lean not to our own understanding and he will direct our path. My prayers are with you all. I Love You!... With a heavy heart and spirit to hear of the loss of such a sweet and kind person words alone are not enough to express the hurt. Whoever she was to many of us Linda was a friend and I'll miss her dearly."The Lord is good,a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.(Nahum 1:7) Mother Thomas take confort in JESUS... To the children and the entire family of Linda Yancey I share my deepest sympathy. I thank God for knowing Linda for over 23 years. Her quiet spirit, kind heart and smile will be missed. She was not just a client she was always a friend and good listener.Through the amazing comfort and faithfulness of Jehovah Rophe'(the lord our healer) know that everything is done and I am praying for the healing of your hearts. Jesus answers all things that our hearts seem not to understand. To Sandra and Derrick please be strong. My love is with your entire family... She was one of the most wonderful people in the world. She is in a better place where she will never hurt again... LINDA HAS ALWAY'S BEEN A BRIGHT AND SHINNING STAR, WITH A SMILE THAT WOULD JUST LIGHT UP THE WORLD. LINDA WAS JUST LIKE A SISTER TO ME... The most common thing that nearly all can agree on is that Linda was the same person from the first day you met her. Always displaying a sweet and pleasant demeanor. Never a foul or unkind word to say about anyone. Our losing her so tragically seems so unfair because of her sweet spirit... Words can not express the sadness I am feeling. But I am grateful and thank God for allowing Linda to touch my life during my early years. She was full of compassion, humility and patience. I will always remember her warm smile. I also thank God for allowing me the opportunity to speak with her last month. We had a wonderful conversation as we brought each other up-to-date on our families and the changes we’ve experienced over the years. She spoke very lovingly about each of you. Linda left me with words of wisdom and inspiration. She will always have a special place in my heart. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. And take comfort in knowing that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalms 46:1. My God grant you peace, comfort and strength... I was devastated to hear of Linda's untimely passing. She was my best friend at Crawford Long Middle and George High School. Even though we lost touch over the years, I will always have fond memories of the long talks and fun times we shared in our youth. Linda will always live in my heart as she does in yours... Linda was a good friend of my sister -- and she also was once my baby sitter. I will always remember her smile and the softness of her voice. I was very heartbroken to hear of her loss...

I am a cousin of Linda Yancey and she will be missed by all that knew her. we grew up together living, next door to each other.I remember times when we all use to play red light, green light, hide and go seek, hop scotch, jacks and ride our bikes. I also remember times when I would call her on the phone, and Derrick would pause on the phone before telling her telephone. he was very controlling, and jealous. I just hate that she did'nt get out of this relationship sooner. I let him stop me from keeping in touch with Linda, because I did'nt want to cause confusion between the two of them. but look like there was already enough going on. I don't beleive all of the bull he's saying about the shooting, because it does'nt add up. excuses, and lies, are just like booties everybody's got one and they all "STINK". Linda is in a better place now and won't have to be bothered with heartache, and pain again. Rest in peace my sister. your boys will be taken care of.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the show on fatal vows and I am truly sorry for your loss. It was the worst episode I ever seen. The kids will be the ones that will suffer the most. I just can't believe a man can kill the mother of his children that way. She was killed in a horrible way. May she rest in peace!
DeleteI am so sorry for what your family and friends have had to go through in facing all of this, losing Linda - in such an awful way, the wondering (why & how), and the waiting for the truth to become public and official.
ReplyDeleteAs a larger national community, we wait too, with you, trusting and praying.
