Report sheds light on struggle that led to police officer's death

[Excerpts] ...Longview police on Friday released a portion of the offense report Officer Lisa Chatterton filed after Harry Goodan summoned authorities to the couple’s home to report his wife’s death. More than 90 percent of Chatterton’s narrative was blacked out by police, who cite their ongoing investigation as an exception to the Texas Open Records Law. What remains uncovered confirms much of previous police statements, including that Goodan immediately told responding officers he had shot his wife. It also reports the couple struggled in their bathroom, with Goodan striking his wife “a couple of times,” knocking her down. “He said he did not know how they ended up in their bathroom,” the report continues, “but he ended up with her gun, and he shot her during the fight.” The report indicates the physical struggle involved both hands and feet... On Thursday, Ellyn Goodan was buried after a ceremony at Mobberly Baptist Church. [Full article here]

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) – There are new details about the murder of Longview Police Officer Jamie Ellyn Goodan, who was shot and killed in her home Saturday morning. Her husband, Harry Goodan, has been charged with her murder.

According to the arrest affidavit released Monday, Harry called police and told them he had just killed his wife. Authorities say when they arrived, Harry invited them in the home, and told them again that he had just killed Ellyn.

Ellyn's father, Jim Rice, says he does not believe his son-in-law could do this, and that he has forgiven Harry.

"I have no animosity against Harry…," Rice explained. "I respect him and love him as a father-in-law could love a son-in-law."

Even in his own suffering, Rice says he's also grieving for his son-in-law.

"I've always had the highest respect for Harry that I've had for anyone," Rice expressed. What can I say? You don't lose that because of an incident where even the tragedy of losing your own daughter. That can't erase what Harry is or who he is. He's still a loving person."

Rice says his daughter's marriage to Harry was failing. He says even in their disagreements, Harry would never intentionally hurt his daughter.

"I think it escalated to a point to where that's what happened. I know that he would never come out and do anything intentional to his wife because he's lost his whole world," said Rice.

Rice explained that what hurts the most, is knowing his 8-year-old grandson, Nick, has lost both of his parents.

Nick is autistic, and was home during the shooting.

Rice tells KLTV "One of the things that broke my heart when he first came in the house, what he said to my wife was ‘I'm sorry you lost your daughter.'"

Monday, as Rice makes arrangements to bury his daughter, he still has compassion for the man accused of taking her life. "If Harry needs a character witness for his trial, I'll be happy to stand up for him."

Harry Goodan remains under suicide watch in the Gregg County Jail, on a $500,000 bond.

...Its funny how he is out on 75,000 dollar bond for killing a police officer and the african american guys who did the shooting on May 15th have a 500,000 dollar bond. His trial has been pushed back yet again to November, which will be 2 years later.Thats the criminal justice system in longview for you. This guy killed a POLICE OFFICER and he's gonna get away with it.If the young guys would've did the same thing they would be sitting in Huntsville waiting on the needle.I'm not saying that the kids are innocent, but how can this guy who committed a crime of this magnitude get these kind of breaks all the way around.I thought that was a capital offense, but i guess not in longview...

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man has plead guilty to the murder of his wife, an off duty police officer.

Harry Goodan was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday afternoon. He's accused of shooting his wife, Longview police officer Jamie Ellyn Goodan. Officer Goodan was found shot to death in her apartment in December 2010.

Ellyn's father, Jim Price, told us in December 2010 that the family forgave Harry Goodan, and that the Harry he knew would never intentionally hurt his daughter.

"No, no, no, no. I would never see Harry as intentionally doing this at all, but when you're in a married situation and their marriage was failing. He realized that he didn't want to lose his wife or his family," Price said."When you get in that situation and you're arguing with your loved one nothing brings out your temper or anger better than in a battle with someone you love. I think it escalated to a point to where that's what happened. I know that he would never come out and do anything intentional to his wife he because he's lost his whole world."

No one could be more devastated by officer Jamie Ellyn Goodan's death than her close friend and neighbor Elfriede Hall.

"Since we've become friends , we visited frequently. I think every woman needs a lady friend to talk to. I probably more or less was her grandmother," Hall said.

The two had a friendship forged through years, with Goodan often caring for Hall when she was ill.

"I would call Ellyn and she would be here in no time, and she would sit with me for hours. She was so thoughtful and she cared for people," she said.

Neighbors said the Goodans were going through marital troubles. The day of the shooting, Hall knew something was wrong.

"I couldn't believe it. Then I saw all the police officers in the back of Ellyn's apartment. I said, 'is it Ellyn?' He said, 'Yes.' I asked, 'how bad is it?' He said, 'She's gone,'" Hall said.

Goodan will be eligible for parole after 10 years. He will also get credit for time served.
