[Excerpts] ...No one could be more devastated by officer Jamie Ellyn Goodan's death than her close friend and neighbor Elfriede Hall. "Since we've become friends , we visited frequently, I think every woman needs a lady friend to talk to, I probably more or less was her grandmother," says Hall. The two had a friendship forged through years, Goodan often caring for Hall when she was ill. "I would call Ellyn and she would be here in no time, and she would sit with me for hours, she was so thoughtful and she cared for people," she says. Neighbors say the Goodans were going through marital troubles. The day of the shooting , Hall knew something was wrong... Her thoughts are now with Gooden's son, Nicholas, who suffers from autism, and who was in the house at the time of the shooting. "How can his mind comprehend that," she says. As police now wear black bands over their badges in Goodans memory, Hall remembers an extraordinary person, a woman who meant the world to her. "To me she was an angel. Ellyn, I miss you already," Hall says. [Full article here]

[Excerpts] ...According to the arrest affidavit released Monday, Harry called police and told them he had just killed his wife. Authorities say when they arrived, Harry invited them in the home, and told them again that he had just killed Ellyn. Ellyn's father, Jim Rice, says he does not believe his son-in-law could do this, and that he has forgiven Harry. "I have no animosity against Harry…," Rice explained. "I respect him and love him as a father-in-law could love a son-in-law." Even in his own suffering, Rice says he's also grieving for his son-in-law. "I've always had the highest respect for Harry that I've had for anyone," Rice expressed. What can I say? You don't lose that because of an incident where even the tragedy of losing your own daughter. That can't erase what Harry is or who he is. He's still a loving person." Rice says his daughter's marriage to Harry was failing. He says even in their disagreements, Harry would never intentionally hurt his daughter... Rice explained that what hurts the most, is knowing his 8-year-old grandson, Nick, has lost both of his parents. Nick is autistic, and was home during the shooting... "If Harry needs a character witness for his trial, I'll be happy to stand up for him." Harry Goodan remains under suicide watch in the Gregg County Jail, on a $500,000 bond. [Full article here]
I do not understand Ellyn's family rushing to forgive her murderer.
ReplyDeleteyou dont have to understand it. thats a miracle.
Deleteyou dont have to understand dad's reasons. or my family. its a miracle we can forgive and try to move on. harboring hate hurts only yourself and doesnt bring her back.
Deleteyou dont have to understand it. thats a miracle.
DeleteMr. Rice lost his daughter and his son-in-law. He apparently loved them both very much. There's not much else that people outside of the situation need to understand about the papa. God be with him and with his grandson.
ReplyDeletethank you. btw this is my birthday -- same day i had to help pick out her final clothes for our family viewing on the 14th.... -- so the more people out there that have positive things to say -- thank you
Deleterushing to forgive her murder? what is wrong with you .. i grew up with mr goodans daughter .. & i was always over at ellyn & mr goodans house. mr goodan is one of the greatest men ive ever met. hes a good father & he was a good husband. ellyns family forgave him because it was truly a accident & they love him & they know the truth .. he would not purposely hurt his wife. why would he shoot his own wife who he loved dearly & leave his son without a mother?? you people are ridiculous. is anyone thinking about harry in this siuation .. hes locked up in jail for the accidental killing of his wife .. i can only imagine the guilt & pain & suffering he is feeling. before anyone goes talking about what they dont know .. maybe they should consider looking at both sides.
ReplyDeletenot an accident and i am both sides
Deleteaccident? You point a loaded weapon at a person thats NO Accident! You pull the trigger on that loaded gun and KILL SOMEONE thats NO accident
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for people who know them to process. Give them a little time.
ReplyDeleteI am Harry's cousin. I've known him all my life. I have never heard of him hurting anyone before. He was an outstanding member of the community as evidenced by his work with the PD and advocate for child protection. You people jump to conclusions. Her family is defending him because they know he is a good guy and would never purposely kill his wife.

I'M MAD. I don't know if I will ever loose my anger for Harry. I tried my best to be understanding and mature with the effect...but the cause is not understandable. The way she died was preventable, I believe 100%.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't so aggressive towards Harry when he told me what happened that same day!!! In fact, all I really wanted was the truth. I remained that sad and inquisitive person until I was able to spend time with him in person. His demeanor was disappointing. I never saw any real remorse or heard any real sincereness with him taking her life. In fact, he was even more tacky than usual.-- Thats what made me mad... That plus his comments leading me to believe he will receive a slap on the wrist. - Im sickened.-- NOT the entire family is on Harry's side. I lost 3 people that day.I lost: MY SISTER, whom was like a MOTHER to me when I was small, AND MY FRIEND!!!!
I was on your side the day before you killed her,I was trying to get her to stay with you, or at least be open minded to continuing on trying in your marriage.. Harry-i pitied you!!! -- I thought you were a good man.
ok.. one year later. i forgive you. I dont know what to say about what i wrote before. I know you have made changes in your life since that day. I know that my anger is gone. I know i want to be civil and try to make my family come closer together with you in it. I'm tired of living in anger. I just want the legalities done with and to have peace with whatever outcome happens.. and to put this to rest..
Deletetrial today....... you may do 10 years....... this is julie again... 3rd time...... ok....... im dead inside... how could you do what you did... and then do what youve done with ANOTHER SISTER of mine..?!@ OMG you are without guilt or boundaries.. god have mercy on me and my sister lisa... no you are laurie. may god deal with you both accordingly. i wanted to be without anger... god help me with this...... tonight you put on your jump suite and get the bars shut behind you for the first time..... after the evidence i heard privately......... thats the least that should happen.... but whom am i to judge.......bye.
ReplyDeleteDiscovery clear. Planned murder. No struggle. She was in bathroom.. taking allergy meds. She screamed through broken window for terror..
