[ Excerpts] ARDEN - A Henderson County deputy who also was once an Asheville police officer was arrested on a domestic violence charge Tuesday. Cory Thomas Burton faces one charge of assault on a female. He is being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under no bond... His employment with the sheriff's office has since been terminated, said department Major Frank Stout. Stout said as a matter of policy incidents where a deputy is charged with a crime would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. "But those are things we deal with every day," he said speaking of domestic violence charges. "When the shoe is on our foot, there are some things we will not compromise on or tolerate"... Before being hired, deputies undergo a "very, very extensive background investigation," Stout said, including a polygraph test and a review of any past incidents relating to domestic violence.
