A Columbia County sheriff's deputy was fired today after being arrested and charged with stalking. Motorcycle deputy Gregory Key Kernaghan, 40, was charged with stalking, making harassing phone calls and terroristic threats, according to sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris. Kernaghan is accused of stalking his estranged wife. "Once we learned of the events, we, of course, we're very disappointed," Morris said. "As we've demonstrated in the past, we enforce the law no matter who is involved. Deputy Kernaghan's actions were dealt with swiftly and justly." Kernaghan was released from the Columbia County Detention Center this afternoon after posting a $5,000 bond, according to jail personnel. Kernaghan's wife, from whom he's been separated from since October 2009, called police Thursday. She claimed that since their separation Kernaghan has followed her on a number of occasions and calls her about 20 times per day, despite being told not to, according to a police report. Also, she said he threatened to hurt her and she has audio recordings of the threats. Kernaghan was a sheriff's office reserve deputy before being hired in February 2007. He was working as a motorcycle deputy with the sheriff's office traffic unit. As with other sheriff's office employees charged with crimes, Kernaghan was terminated upon his arrest, Morris said. http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/crime-courts/2010-05-28/columbia-county-deputy-arrested-and-fired

[Excerpts] Former Columbia County sheriff's deputy Gregory Key Kernaghan has been arrested again on a stalking charge. This time the charge is aggravated stalking, a felony in Georgia that carries the possibility of prison time if convicted. Kernaghan was arrested just after 6:15 pm Monday (June 14) at a Martinez residence. Online property records indicate that residence belongs to Gregory and Stephanie Kernaghan. Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris says the charge was upgraded to aggravated stalking because Kernaghan violated a condition of his bond when he was released after the earlier arrest. Morris says Kernaghan tried to contact his estranged wife directly and through another person. Last month Kernaghan was arrested on a stalking charge after a complaint from his wife, Stephanie. At that time she indicated he was calling her up to 20 times a day. The couple is in the process of a divorce. After the first arrest, Kernaghan was fired by the sheriff. He was a motorcycle patrol officer. http://www.wrdw.com/crimeteam12/headlines/96374154.html

[Excerpts] A former Columbia County sheriff’s deputy fired last month after being arrested for stalking, was arrested again Monday for attempting to contact his estranged wife. Gregory Key Kernaghan, 40, was arrested Monday evening and charged with aggravated stalking. Kernaghan, a former motorcycle deputy, was charged in May with stalking, making harassing phone calls and terroristic threats, according to sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris. He was accused of stalking his estranged wife. After that arrest, he had been released from the Columbia County Detention Center after posting a $5,000 conditional bond, according to jail personnel.  One of the conditions of the bond was that he have no contact, direct, indirect or through another person, with his wife. On several occasions since, Kernaghan clearly violated the order by attempting to contact her both directly and through another person, Morris said. In May, Kernaghan’s wife, from whom he’s been separated since October 2009, told police Kernaghan has followed her on a number of occasions and called her about 20 times per day, despite being told not to, according to a police report. Also, she said he threatened to hurt her and she has audio recordings of the threats. He is being held without bond, according to jail records. http://chronicle.augusta.com/latest-news/2010-06-15/ex-deputy-arrested-again-stalking-charge?v=1276597241

OFFICER SURRENDERS AFTER STANDOFF: A Florence SWAT team member returns to a vehicle after a standoff Saturday
Times Daily
By Dennis Sherer dennis.sherer@timesdaily.com
June 19, 2010An 11-hour standoff between law enforcement officers and one of their own ended peacefully Saturday when hostage negotiators persuaded the Littleville police officer to surrender. Littleville Police Chief Chris Joly confirmed the man was a Littleville police officer... Neighbors and others at the scene identified the man as David Saccocio... Neighbors said Saccocio and his wife are going through a divorce. They added the officer moved into the apartment in May. Joly said the standoff began about 1 a.m and ended about 11:45 a.m... “One of our officers is going through some extreme family issues,” Joly said. “He barricaded himself in his apartment, threatening to do harm to himself and others... Saccocio formerly worked as an officer with the Tuscumbia Police Department. He was arrested in December 2007 in Florence and charged with driving under the influence after police received a report that Saccocio was causing a disturbance at his girlfriend's house on Crest Street. The arrest prompted Saccocio to resign his job in Tuscumbia. Saccocio moved to Rhode Island briefly before returning to the Shoals and accepting a job with the Littleville Police Department... Police fired at least 10 tear gas canisters through the windows of Saccocio's apartment about an hour before he surrendered. When police began firing tear gas, the loud boom associated with firing the canisters prompted some of Saccocio's neighbors, who were gathered about ¼-mile away, to begin praying aloud for his safety and the safety of the police officers. “I pray they don't have to shoot him,” said Barry Cummings, who also lives in the apartment complex... Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan, who visited Saccocio at the jail, said he was doing fine. “He realizes he needs some help,” Logan said. [Full article here]

[TX] OH SH*T! F*CK! KELLY! PLEASE DROP THE GUN KELLY! KELLY DROP THE GUN! KELLY DROP THE GUN! KELLY DROP THE GUN! KELLY DROP THE GUN! DROP THE GUN, KELLY. DROP THE GUN. KELLY DROP THE GUN.

When on-duty Dallas Police Officers Zachary Helm and Miguel Jamaica did not disarm Helm's ARMED drunk girlfriend - Dallas Police Officer Kelly Beemer - before putting her in the patrol car it seemed like another one of those friendly favors.

Officer Beemer could have easily killed fellow officers, bar patrons, herself, or any within-range multiple members of the public. I'm thankful all are okay but this is an opportunity to get things clear. POLICY MUST govern how officers address situations with other out-of-their-mind impaired and/or crime-committing officers.

Don't get it twisted. There was no "accidental" firing of a weapon here, despite the early news reports.

EXCERPTS FROM ARTICLES BELOW:

...[Dallas Police Officer Kelly] Beemer and other officers had been drinking... Police said the incident happened after Kelly Beemer, an off-duty officer who police said had a few [???] drinks... Prior to being picked up, Beemer was allegedly offered rides from other officers at the bar, and at one point ran and hid from officers... Two on-duty patrol officers, Miguel Jamaica and Zachary Helm, came to the bar to help get Beemer under control, police said. Helm had been dating Beemer... she fired a revolver in a squad car... [Dallas Police Department] Commanders were called to the scene, but did not arrest Beemer at the time, saying she was too drunk to be interviewed... Beemer was arrested Thursday and charged with firing a weapon inside the city limits...

TRANSCRIBED FROM PATROL CAR'S DASHCAM - OFFICER BEEMER IN THE BACK SEAT:

DALLAS OFFICER FREE ON BOND AFTER FIRING PISTOL IN SQUAD CAR IN OFF-DUTY INCIDENT
The Dallas Morning News
By Tanya Eiserer
Friday, June 18, 2010
[Excerpts] A Dallas police officer who faces a misdemeanor charge after she fired a revolver in a squad car during a drunken off-duty incident has been released on bond from the Dallas County Jail... Her friends decided she shouldn't drive herself home, police said. Two on-duty patrol officers came to the bar to help get an incoherent Beemer under control, police said. About 11:20 p.m., as the squad car approached the intersection of Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road, Beemer began demanding that the officer driving stop the vehicle. She pulled a revolver from her ankle holster and fired into the floorboard... [Full article here]

Every department needs a policy of EXACTLY what to do in instances that involve another officer. Beemer would have been arrested at least for public drunkeness and resisting arrest is she were not a cop. She would have been searched for weapons before she was put in the car. Cop favors are not usually favors by the time they hit the news. The preferential treatment that Officer Beemer was lethal.

DALLAS POLICE INVESTIGATE GUN GOING OFF IN SQUAD CAR

June 17, 2010 at 9:11 AM
[Excerpts] A Dallas police officer is on administrative leave after authorities said she fired off her gun while off-duty in a squad car... police rushed to the scene at Abrams Road and Gaston Avenue and found three officers at the scene. Police said the incident happened after Kelly Beemer, an off-duty officer who police said had a few drinks, had gotten into a squad car of an on-duty police officer. Beemer allegedly pulled out her service weapon from her holster and fired the gun into the floorboard. Sources said she was belligerent at the time. Part of the incident was captured on audio tape from a dash cam camera... Prior to the incident, video from the dash cam showed two officers holding a stumbling Beemer up by her arms as they walked her towards the squad car. Throughout the drive, authorities said Beemer cried and acted belligerent, believing she was under arrest. Sources said the on-duty officer driving the squad car was originally called to the bar where Beemer and other officers had been drinking. Prior to being picked up, Beemer was allegedly offered rides from other officers at the bar, and at one point ran and hid from officers... Commanders were called to the scene, but did not arrest Beemer at the time, saying she was too drunk to be interviewed. It wasn't until they viewed the tape that they decided to arrest and charge Beemer. "We are disappointed in her behavior there," said First Asst. Chief Charles Cato, Dallas Police Department. "I know I receive calls from friends, relatives who had a little too much to drink and needed a ride home, and all the people I've dealt with in that situation were just grateful that someone was willing to come out and pick them up. And so, in Officer Beemer's conduct, that was certainly a discredit to herself and to the people that were trying to help her. She put them in a really bad situation"... Beemer was arrested Thursday and charged with firing a weapon inside the city limits... Meanwhile, she has been stripped of her weapon and badge until the investigation is complete. Two other officers are on restrictive duty as police investigate their role in the incident... [Full article here]

And what about the cops that Officer Beemer was drinking with? Did they consider her weapon? How drunk were they? Did they have their weapons in the bar while they were drinking too? (And how did THEY get home?)

DALLAS OFFICER ACCUSED OF FIRING HER GUN IN SQUAD CAR DURING DRUNKEN INCIDENT
The Dallas Morning News
By Tanya Eiserer
June 18, 2010
[Excerpts] ...[Dallas police] Officer Kelly Beemer, 27, has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a criminal investigation. "I am extremely disappointed by Officer Beemer's conduct and the actions she took during this incident," Police Chief David Brown said in a prepared statement. "The recklessness she displayed is unacceptable conduct for a Dallas police officer"... Beemer was at Lee Harvey's bar in South Dallas, where she had been drinking. Her friends decided she shouldn't drive herself home... An off-duty officer at the bar offered to give Beemer a ride home, but authorities said she wouldn't tell the officer where she lived. She got out of that officer's vehicle and tried to hide... Two on-duty patrol officers, Miguel Jamaica and Zachary Helm, came to the bar to help get Beemer under control, police said. Helm had been dating Beemer... Helm and Jamaica walked a staggering and apparently incoherent Beemer to Helm's car... About 11:20 p.m., as Helm approached the intersection of Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road, Beemer began demanding that he stop the squad car... "I swear you need to stop now," she said just before pulling a revolver from her ankle holster and firing into the floorboard. Helm jumped out of the vehicle, demanding repeatedly that she drop the gun... Helm and another off-duty officer who had been following in his personal vehicle then disarmed her... Brown said Helm and Jamaica made a "good faith effort to assist a fellow officer" but should have arrested her for public intoxication once it became clear she was a danger to herself and others... Jamaica and Helm have been placed on restricted duty... [Full article here]

A Modesto police officer was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of violating a domestic violence protective order. This is the second arrest in several months for officer Gabriel Martinez. Modesto police arrested him Jan. 17 on suspicion of felony domestic violence after his wife called police... Sheriff's Sgt. Vince Kimbrough said the Martinezes are separated and are in the process of divorcing. The protective order was filed in March, one month after the Stanislaus County district attorney's office filed a felony domestic violence charge against Martinez from the Jan. 17 arrest.
