[AK] Nome Police Officer Matthew Owens trial - CONVICTED in 2nd trial of killing Sonya

December 2005
Nome Police Officer Matthew Owens was accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Sonya Dora Nitcuk Ivanoff in 2003. His first trial ended with a hung jury, but his second one ended with a guilty verdict. After a month and a half of testimony and more than 80 witnesses, Owens has been found guilty of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The 12 jurors, after deliberating for three and a half days, stood before Judge Ben Esche and said they agreed with the verdict. Several of those jurors were crying.
Info excerpted from: Owens found guilty of murder, KTUU Alaska News, December 6, 2005.

  1. Hi, I'm Kabespir, investigative reporter for the International Native & Metis Women's Council.
I certainly appreciate the wonderful but sad job of reporting on this case. I am investigating current disappearances as well as old cases in Nome, Alaska at this time and came across your blog. Sensitive and well done...

  5. Wow, my first statement on this horrific incident that still haunts me, over a decade after I left this small beautiful & generally peaceful town.
Still seeing the beautiful smile off this young girl still haunts me, at the same age I was, at the time. She had so much potential and was only there to achieve and advance her life, never asking for anything more then what she gave. I had met her no more than a fortnight before this tragic incident which was nothing but a stalking/obsession, from the officer (Matt Owens) involved. At the time my fiance and at least 2 friends (A Native and a White) had numerously had obscure encounters with him.
This is my first time talking out about this matter and just hope I can help anyone at all about this, in any way and any information anyone can pass through is appreciated as so much has been hidden as we all know, I hope to hear from anyone, My Name is Nick, I'm sure a few off you know me.... nicholas.sanderson@hotmail.com
