[Excerpts] Law enforcement authorities in Orange County remain tight-lipped about a high-profile attempted murder case, refusing to release additional information in connection to Friday’s shooting of a veteran police investigator. After repeated requests by the Star-Exponent for a booking photo of suspect Brenda Canosa, jail officials said they won’t release it because it’s considered an internal record and part of the inmate’s personal file... In response to the Star-Exponent’s Freedom of Information Act request for a copy of the 911 call reporting the shooting, Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos said via e-mail Monday that “releasing this information could jeopardize the ongoing investigation or prosecution of this case.” Bob Canosa, 55, who formerly worked as an investigator for the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office until transferring to Orange County in 2007, was shot with a small-caliber rifle, according to sources familiar with the case. He was listed in critical condition Monday, according to a spokeswoman with the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. A source close to the family said Bob Canosa underwent surgery Monday to repair his pancreas, and physicians have already operated on his aorta. He is also said to be responding to questions and is aware of what happened to him. Only a select number of visitors are allowed to see Bob Canosa, and hospital personnel are forbidding access to his room, even among his colleagues in the law enforcement community... [Excerpts] The estranged wife of an Orange County sheriff's investigator continues to await a bond hearing in his shooting after the case was sent back to Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court yesterday. Brenda Lee Canosa, who is charged with three felonies in the wounding of Investigator Bob Canosa, appeared in General District Court yesterday with her attorney, Dana Slater. As is required in domestic cases, Judge Edward Carpenter sent the case to J&DR Court, where Canosa will appear Monday. She had appeared in J&DR court on Monday of this week, the first opportunity for her to go before a judge after her arrest Friday night. However, J&DR Judge Frank Somerville could not hear her case because a magistrate had mistakenly checked the General District Court box on the warrants for her arrest. Her first legal appearance in J&DR court next Monday will be a preliminary hearing that could result in bail being set. Further prosecution of the case will take place in circuit court, where felonies are tried... [Full article here]

  3. How can the media and press accuse someone without evidence, and on mere speculation only?

  4. I think the media has been unusually careful. What do you feel they are saying that is accusatory? My take is that they are seeking info - like the 911 call and more understanding about the motive.
