Rancho Adobe Fire Captain Michael Bechtold was not only previously convicted of a domestic violence crime, but he was also in violation of his probation from that conviction. Too many public safety agencies still don't think domestic violence is (really) a crime. They know that TECHnically it's a crime, but still consider it's a personal or private matter than unfortunately finds it's way to court. It's a crime. Why put someone convicted of breaking the law in the highest positions of trust? It's about character. Whoever put or left Bechtold over the money should be responsible for the financial losses.

[Excerpts] A captain with the Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District in Sonoma County has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $63,000 from the firefighters union... Authorities determined that Bechtold had forged and cashed several association checks, Raasch said. He spent the money on housing, the Sharks season tickets, a trip to Disneyland and to pay a divorce attorney and child support... At a hearing Monday, Superior Court Judge Ken Gnoss also found Bechtold guilty of a probation violation stemming from a 2009 misdemeanor domestic violence conviction.
