[Excerpts] A former Opelousas Police Officer has been arrested and charged with killing his wife. The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office was informed at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday that Chanda White Pickney, 33, of Woodworth had been brought to Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital by her husband, Donald. She excelled as a student, community volunteer, and as an active church member, while also managing to achieve the highest Girl Scout ranking of Ambassador Girl Scout. Chanda graduated with honors from LSU with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and continued her education at LSU Health Science Center at Shreveport where she received her Physician Assistant degree. She began practicing as a Physician Assistant under the direction of Dr. Calvin White, and subsequently joined the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Mental Health staff in March 2006... [Excerpts] An arrest has been made in the suspicious death of a VA employee. Rapides deputies have arrested a VA security officer, Donald Pickney, for the death of his wife, also a VA employee. Deputies say 33-year-old Chanda Pickney died at their home in the Timberlake subdivision in Woodworth. She was a physician’s assistant at the VA hospital. The investigation into her death started Saturday. Jasper Bay with the Rapides sheriff’s office said, “we determined that some of the injuries on her at the time… where it was probable cause to arrest him first for second degree murder charges, or one count second degree battery, one count false imprisonment, one count second degree murder… we are waiting for autopsy, and basically we are continuing our investigation from that point”... [Excerpts] ...On Saturday, Rapides Parish Sheriff's deputies were called to Cabrini Hospital to investigate a "dead on arrival" patient, 33-year-old Chanda Pickney of Woodworth, who was brought to the hospital by her husband, Donald. "Based on the physical nature of it, things on her body, we felt that we had enough probable cause to arrest her husband in the death of Mrs. Pickney," said Major Jasper Bay, with RPSO... The VA release the following statement: "The Alexandria VA Medical Center is sad to confirm the death of an employee who worked as a physician assistant in the mental health department. [Excerpts] A former Opelousas police officer and St. Landry Parish sheriff's deputy [Donald Pickney] who now lives in Woodworth in Rapides Parish area has been arrested and charged with killing his wife [Chanda White Pickney]... Paul N. Gennuso, who is retired from the Opelousas Police Department, said he knew both Pickneys well and served as Donald Pickney's supervisor during his time on the force in the 1990s... He called Pickney "a fair officer" and had praise for the victim, who was the niece of Dr. Calvin White, a family practice physician in Opelousas. "She went to school with my daughter. She had a inner beauty that was unbelievable," Gennuso said of Chanda, who worked as a physician's assistant at the Alexandria Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Pineville. Laura Balthazar, who was chief deputy for then-St. Landry Parish Sheriff Howard Zerangue, was less surprised by the news.     [Excerpts] A Rapides Parish judge has granted a protective order to the parents and 4-year-old child of a homicide victim believed by police to have been killed by her husband. Andrew and Bernadell White this week filed for the protective order against Donald Pickney of Woodworth, who is suspected of killing Chanda White Pickney. Ninth District Judge Thomas Yeager signed the order Wednesday... Writing in the petition for protective order alludes to some of charges against Donald Pickney. "Between Oct. 27 and Oct. 29, 2011, ... the defendant admitted to striking the minor's mother, handcuffing the minor's mother," according to the petition... Rapides Parish Sheriff's Maj. Jasper Bay said Thursday he would not release more information on the investigation... Bay said detectives don't know exactly how Chanda Pickney was killed, and he would not say what investigators believe was the cause of her death. An autopsy was done on the victim's body on Monday.     4. I think about her often. She was truelly a wonderful human being. She was my doctor but I also considered her a friend. She had hundreds of patients and remembered everyone individually. To the person who wouldn't leave their name GUILTY was proven with the funeral.
