An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy got into a fistfight in Highland Park that turned into a melee, leaving her with stab wounds and another combatant with gunshot wounds, authorities said today. The deputy, who was on medical leave from the sheriff's department, was in stable condition at a hospital following the fight that broke out about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, a sheriff's department spokesman said. The fight between the woman, identified by the sheriff's department as an off-duty deputy, and another woman broke out outside the Cave bar at 60th and Figueroa streets. "Two people got in a fistfight, but it turned into a huge melee, where one person got shot and one person got stabbed," said LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh. The other woman also was in stable condition, he said. Investigators did not know who fired the gunshots or wielded the knife, he said. At least two people were arrested in connection with the melee, Borihanh said. He said police learned of the altercation when one of the injured sought assistance at a nearby L.A. city fire station. Sources familiar with the investigation said the stabbing and shooting were related to a party in the area. Authorities did not release the deputy's name. [LINK]

An off-duty female sheriff's deputy who was stabbed and another woman who was shot during a fight in Highland Park were recovering today, while a relative of the deputy was behind bars on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said.

Taylor Olivarez, 20, described as a relative of the deputy, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and booked downtown at Parker Center. He was being held early today on $500,000 bail, according to jail records.

The name of the shot woman and stabbed sheriff's deputy were being withheld.

Los Angeles police detectives assigned to the Northeast Station detectives were handling the investigation. The Sheriff's Department made no official statements about the deputy or the violent episode.

The fight occurred around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday when two women near a cocktail bar at Avenue 60 and North Figueroa Street got into a fight on the sidewalk, Los Angeles police said.

The off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, 29, was cut several times, and the other woman, 25, was shot with a handgun, police said.

A handgun belonging to the deputy was recovered at the scene, police said, but it was unclear if it was her duty weapon.

Both women were taken to hospitals and expected to make full recoveries, Lt. Brian Thomas of the LAPD's Northeast Station said early today.

Anyone with more information about the fight was asked to call detectives Emilio Garay or Michael Pulley at 213-847-4272.
