[CA] Arrest on felony spousal abuse charge doesn't keep City Attorney Hunt off his job

[Excerpts] The panicked 16-year-old son of Newport Beach City Atty. David Hunt told a 911 dispatcher that his father “just went crazy” and pushed his mother before his arrest on suspicion of felony spousal abuse last weekend, according to a recording of the call released by Santa Ana police. “Hi, my dad just went crazy,” the 16-year-old said in the 911 recording. “He pushed my mom down and started going after my brother”... Hunt’s 16-year-old son called 911 from a separate building off of the family’s main residence the night of the scuffle. A woman’s voice can be heard saying “lock the door” at one point during the recording. “Yeah, sorry. My dad freaked out. I don’t know what’s wrong,” Hunt’s 18-year-old son told the 911 operator after taking the phone from his younger brother... Hunt posted $50,000 bail four hours after his arrest and was back at work on Tuesday. The Newport Beach City Council will meet with Hunt in closed session on Tuesday... The city could take disciplinary action against Hunt, according to the city’s employee code, for “misconduct committed when the employee is off duty, including a violation of a criminal law, provided there is a reasonable relationship between the misconduct and the interests of the city or the employee’s duties.” [Full article here]

Mayor Keith Curry said he did not know yet what action the city might take...     NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The City Attorney for Newport Beach is going on voluntary administrative leave following his arrest on suspicion of spousal abuse.

    David Hunt was arrested at his Santa Ana home on March 14 after he was accused of hitting his wife. Police said he was arguing with his son when his wife tried to intervene. She was taken to a local hospital for a cut on her arm and a bump on her head.

    The Newport Beach City Council has approved Hunt's request to take a paid administrative leave. No word yet on whether criminal charges will be filed.
