[Excerpts] Jersey City Police Officer Juan Torres Jr. was convicted Friday on domestic violence charges in an incident with the mother of his children. A Jersey City police officer faces up to 10 in prison after his conviction late Friday on multiple counts in a domestic violence incident in which he found the mother of his children with another man in a parked car in Bayonne... Officer Juan Torres Jr., 29, of Jersey City, was convicted unlawful possession of his service handgun, simple assault and endangering the welfare of his 18-month-old child and he faces a minimum of 3 to 5 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Pete Stoma said today. The jury convicted the officer even though the victim changed her story during the trial and testified that Torres had assaulted her in self defense... the jury chose instead to believe the statement made by the victim immediately following the assault... [Excerpts] A Jersey City police officer [Juan Torres Jr.] faces up to 10 years in prison as a result of his conviction Friday on multiple counts of domestic violence, endangering the welfare of a child, and other charges... "This verdict demonstrates that no person is above the law, especially in the context of a case involving domestic violence and endangering the welfare of a little child," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio... Torres was convicted of possessing his service weapon for an unlawful purpose, simple assault and endangering the welfare of his 18-month-old child. The weapons offense carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and Torres will face a minimum of 3 to 5 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole when sentenced on April 23 by Judge Frederick J. Theemling Jr... "The judicial process took its course and the officer will continue on suspension until the order of forfeiture from the Prosecutor's Office comes in and we will then terminate him," Jersey City Police Director Sam Jefferson said. JERSEY CITY COP SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR ASSAULT ON GIRLFRIEND, ENDANGERING CHILD

[Excerpts] A Jersey City police officer will serve up to five years in prison for assaulting the mother of his child and endangering the 15-month-old girl even though his girlfriend testified at trial that she lied about the incident to police. On Friday, the girlfriend, Stacy Stackow, tearfully pleaded for leniency before Officer Juan Torres, 29, was sentenced to 3 to 5 five years in prison and led away in handcuffs from the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling. Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Pete Stoma said he would file paperwork requiring Torres to give up his position on the police department and Theemling said he would sign the order...
