March 17, 2010
3/17/10 - A Livingston County official was held at gun-point today by her ex-husband, who was reportedly upset over the couple’s divorce settlement. Fowlerville Attorney and Unadilla Township Supervisor Linda Walker returned to her law office shortly after 1pm when her ex-husband, Terence Shawn Kiernan, walked in the back door and pulled out a gun. Walker reportedly wrestled with Kiernan for the gun but he knocked her to the ground and held the gun to her head, threatening to kill her. Kiernan was allegedly angry because Walker received a portion of his pension benefits through their divorce agreement. He’s believed to have fled the office after Walker agreed to return the pension benefits. As soon as he left, Walker called 911. Fowlerville Police Chief Tom Couling tells WHMI that a be-on-the-lookout alert was issued and Tiernan was arrested a short time later by Unadilla Township Police on Donahue Road. Couling says a small handgun was recovered and they are seeking charges of felonious assault against Tiernan, who remains lodged in the Livingston County Jail. (JM) [LINK]

A Unadilla Township man is in police custody after allegedly holding a gun to the head of a lawyer earlier this afternoon and threatening to kill her. Police will not identify the man, but the lawyer said it was her ex-husband who was angry about their divorce settlement.

Police did not release the name of the suspect, but did confirm the incident and that they have a suspect in custody.

The victim, Fowlerville attorney and Unadilla Township Supervisor Linda Walker, tearfully said her ex-husband, Terence Shawn Kiernan, walked in the back door of her law office on Grand River Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. She said he pointed a silver revolver at her head and threatened to kill her.

“My ex-husband tried to kill me today,” she cried. “I thought I was going to die today... He went on a rampage today.”

Walker said she had just returned from lunch when she heard the back door to her office open. She assumed it was her grandson, but instead it was Kiernan, who pulled a gun out of his pocket.

Walker said she screamed and begged with Kiernan “not to kill me,” and wrestled with him for the gun, but he knocked her to the ground and held the gun at her head.

“I grabbed a metal garbage can and put it on my head so he wouldn’t be able to ...” she said, her voice trailing off. “I wasn’t thinking. It was horrible.”

Walker said Kiernan was angry with her because she receives a portion of his pension benefits through their divorce agreement. She said Kiernan demanded that she return the benefit or he would kill her. She said he also threatened to kill her if she called police.

Walker said her ex-husband fled her office after she agreed to return the pension benefit and that as soon as he left, she called 911.

Fowlerville Police Chief Tom Couling said the suspect was “headed back to (his) residence” when Unadilla Township police stopped his silver Ford Focus on Donohoue Road, south of Wasson Road, within half an hour. The chief said officers found a handgun in his vehicle, but he declined to say what type of gun.

Couling said his office will seek felonious assault charge against the suspect.

Walker said she and Kierna separated in 2005, but their divorce was not finalized until December. [LINK]
