[Excerpt] Another Pittsburgh firefighter is in trouble with the law. Officials say 50-year-old George Tarrant was taken to jail on Thursday after his wife called police. The criminal complaint says that after an argument, Deborah Tarrant told police her husband left a gun on a TV in the bedroom surrounded by bullets with her name on them. She also said he threatened to kill her first "before he kills everyone else." It wasn't the first time the couple was involved in the justice system. In 2006, she claimed in a protection from abuse filing that she feared for her life... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] A Pittsburgh firefighter faces an unpaid suspension after police said he threatened to kill his wife, the latest in what fire Chief Darryl Jones called a pattern of domestic violence. George Tarrant, 50, of Lincoln-Lemington, was charged Thursday night with harassment and stalking, one of at least four firefighters arrested in as many months... His wife, Debra, told police the two had been arguing for two days, and she feared their fighting was "escalating to a higher degree of violence towards her"... He wouldn't stop shouting at her as she tried to sleep, so she went to her daughter's house. When she returned home to retrieve her clothing, Mr. Tarrant "started ranting again, and when she went into the bedroom she saw a gun on top of the television surrounded by bullets with her name on them," the complaint says. Her husband then told her "he was going to kill her first before he kills everyone else," police said. Mrs. Tarrant told officers her husband suffers from depression and has been arrested in the past for hitting her in the face with a broom handle, and he has choked her. Court records show he pleaded guilty to harassment in 2007 and that Mrs. Tarrant has filed protection from abuse orders against him in the past... Chief Jones said he recommended an unpaid suspension pending the outcome of a trial board hearing to keep in line with the city's zero-tolerance policy, which mandates discipline for city workers arrested for domestic violence... "It's 1 percent of our firefighters; there's 99 percent out there doing their job, every day, and who will continue to do their job," Chief Jones said. "The 1 percent isn't all of us. The key is for us to figure out what's the problem with the 1 percent and get things turned around"... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] ..."Well, my immediate reaction would not qualify for filming. I was angry because I am frustrated with the image that one percent of the firefighters is giving the whole bureau," said Fire Chief Darryl Jones. "If the public loses confidence in us and our ability to do our job, then we are useless." Tarrant, who remains in the Allegheny County Jail pending a mental health evaluation, has been charged with harassment and stalking... A protection from abuse order was filed against Tarrant in August 2006. Around the same time, he pleaded guilty to a summary charge of harassment. Jones said on Friday that Pennsylvania has very strict laws regarding when a firefighter can be fired, and a PFA and a summary conviction are not enough to do it. Jones said he's recommending an unpaid suspension for Tarrant, pending the outcome of an internal hearing by a fire trial board. Only Public Safety Director Michael Huss can actually suspend firefighters... Jones said he's urging firefighters to seek counseling for any issues they may have before they get in trouble.... [Excerpts] ...Tarrant's wife told police that her husband was arrested before for having hit her in the face with a broom handle and that he has choked her. State court records show that Tarrant pleaded guilty to a harassment charge in August 2007. The record doesn't list a sentence imposed. Fire Chief Darryl Jones recommended Friday that Tarrant be suspended without pay, pending the outcome of an investigation by a trial board. "Up until this, he has been an exemplary firefighter," Jones said. "But I have some serious concerns about the safety of his family and about his safety. This does not reflect on the character of our firefighters. Ninety-nine percent of our firefighters are out there working hard every day." Joseph King, president of International Association of Fire Fighters No. 1, could not be reached for comment... [Full article here]

A Pittsburgh firefighter has been acquitted of charges that he threatened to kill his wife.
An Allegheny County jury on Friday acquitted George Tarrant, 51, of Lincoln-Lemington, of charges of making terroristic threats and simple assault. The charges were filed in March.
Tarrant is a nine-year veteran and worked at Engine 15 in Lincoln-Lemington. His wife told police he threatened to kill her during an argument and that she found bullets with her name written on them at their house, police said. Common Pleas Judge Kathleen Durkin presided over the trial.
