POLICE: MAN BEHIND FORKS MURDER-SUICIDE LEFT NOTE

[Excerpts] ...Investigators believe James Grant, 49, shot his wife, 43-year-old Brenda Grant, in the head before turning the gun on himself, [Clallam County Sheriff’s Detective Lyman] Moores said. Police responded to the couple's home at approximately 6 a.m. after a friend of James Grant, who'd received a strange text message from him, called 911. "You'll hate me. Please take the two kids and raise them right. Take the best care of them," the message said. The recipient called James Grant, who said he didn't think he'd be around much longer. The friend rushed over to the house in the 100 block of G St., and while standing outside, heard a gunshot coming from inside the house... Using a bull horn, police negotiators tried to contact James Grant, but got no answer. After five hours, two children - a boy, 10, and a girl, either 4 or 6 - ran out of the house. Neither was injured. The kids were sleeping in another room in the home at the time of the shooting, Moores said. The boy told investigators he woke up to find his sister in bed with him. The children opened the bedroom door and saw their mother... and their father in a similar state with a handgun in his lap. Investigators found an apparent suicide note signed by James Grant. In the note found on the kitchen table, the man said he'd take his wife's and his own lives, and asked that their kids be well cared for... "As far as the investigation goes, there is no mistake to the event that took place," Moores said... "This is a big shock to the community. This is a small community, and these people have been around a long time. So there is a lot of concern... My heartfelt and deepest sympathy goes out to the children and the family in this tragic situation. It is really hard on everyone - the family, the friends. It is hard investigating this type of crimes, and we really empathize with the loss." [Full article here]
