If Geoff Simpson is violent to his family in PUBLIC what happens when no outside witnesses are around? How could Simpson possibly represent anyone or vote wisely when his behavior to his own family is so beligerant and his reasoning so skewed? LEGALLY will he be held accountable this time?

STATE REP. GEOFF SIMPSON CHARGED WITH GROSS MISDEMEANOR ASSAULT BY SEATTLE CITY ATTORNEY

July 10, 2010
The Seattle City Attorney's office filed charges against state Rep. Geoff Simpson, D-Covington, today, July 8, for gross misdemeanor assault in connection with a domestic violence incident... A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 26... A gross misdemeanor is punishable by 365 days in jail and a $5,000 fine... The charge filed by the prosecutor involves an alleged domestic violence incident on May 22 at Children's where Simpson’s ex-wife attempted to keep him out of a room where his 12-year-old daughter was in the hospital recovering from surgery. The Seattle Police Department report completed May 22 stated his daughter had asked him not to visit her while she was in the hospital. According to the police report, Simpson pushed his ex-wife out of the room and used the door to “force her all the way out.” According to his ex-wife's statement in the police report, Simpson "barricaded the door and shut the blinds." The police report stated the security officer asked for his “ID/Lanyard.” According to the report Simpson said the hospital had no right to keep him from seeing his daughter and he left with the lanyard... The social worker's statement noted he was yelling inside the room and would not open the door. The police report was forwarded to the Seattle City Attorney's office and after review the city attorney filed the gross misdemeanor assault charge today. Simpson’s wife filed for a temporary order for protection against him May 27. The order was reissued June 10 and extended through July 29. Simpson said when reached by phone it was his court appointed day to see his daughter. "On May 22 I went because it was my time to be with my daughter," Simpson said when reached by phone. [LINK]

State Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-47) was arrested over the weekend on a domestic violence charge. He’s just issued the following public statement: "This is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved. The end of a marriage is an emotional and trying time for any family, and mine is no exception. As a firefighter and first responder, I have witnessed the reality of domestic violence and provided care for many victims. As a state legislator, I remain strongly in support of erring on the side of protecting potential victims with our laws and their enforcement – even when, in situations like mine, it can result in unwarranted charges. I am confident that once the facts come to light I will be exonerated. I believe in our justice system and will continue to cooperate fully as this situation is resolved. The details are sketchy, and I’m told neither Simpson or his ex-wife are talking publicly on the advice of their lawyers, but as I understand it, the arrest came after police were called to the ex-wife’s house while the two were having an argument. No actual physical violence was alleged or observed, but state law apparently provides police officers little discretion under these circumstances, even when all parties involved do not want the arrest to happen"... I have no use for anyone using violence and if Geoff is guilty of this, let's throw the book at him and get rid of him as a legislator. However, I've been reading the stories on this and find a couple of things peculiar. Geoff and Kathy were married for over 20 years and there was no report of abuse during that whole time. Since the divorce it appears that Geoff is never charged with anything EXCEPT during election years. I'm not familiar with abusers, but it seems to me that this doesn't fit the profile. As a politician, Geoff would have to know to practice his "off-year" behavior during the year he's trying to keep his job. Yet every election cycle, Kathy has him charged. (Last time the charge was completely dismissed.) I find the timing just too peculiar.
ReplyDeleteHe's violent in *public* and you blame HER for picking an election year?. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou're presuming he entered the marriage violent and endured it silently for 20 years. What makes you think that?
Victims of powerful people are very likely to NOT report and if you give it some thought you can probably come up with at least a few reasons why.
I'd explain some of them but your interest is building an evil-woman conspiracy theory so I'd be wasting my time.
From what I understand this behavior is not new and is not false because "it is an election year". This time there were witnesses to back up her reports.
ReplyDeleteI could address the fact with your anonymous commenter that during my marriage I reported his abuse by making 911 calls three times in two years. Once was because he had me up against a wall by my throat and threatened to kill me in front of my son. Needless to say, NOTHING was done any of the times that I begged for their help. Not even when I had credible witnesses.
We have been living apart for a little over a year now and the abusive behaviors have not stopped. Far from it, in fact. Only the physical violence has ended...simply because he is 4000 miles away from me.
Separation and divorce do NOT stop the violence and abuse especially when there are children the abuser chooses to use as pawns in their games. It is about CONTROL and POWER and they do anything to attempt to maintain it.
NEVER question a woman, especially with witness statements, who says that she has been abused. Anonymous commenter, you have NO CLUE how much courage it takes to do that...and HOPE that someone will pay attention for once.
Funny how, when one makes the comment that it might not be the man, suddenly one is accused of building "an evil woman conspiracy theory." Right. So why do YOU hate men so much that any time a man is accused, you're ready to immediately jump to the conclusion that all men are "evil abusing tyrants"???
ReplyDeleteHow do you know he was violent, were you there? I wasn't. All we have is the news reports and frankly, I would prefer to wait until after the hearing to see what facts are presented. I said no such thing about Geoff entering the marriage violently, but if he had he must have had some will power not to exhibit one iota of it during the over two decades of marriage. In every example of abusers that I've noted, that seems incredibly unlikely.
Last, but not least to answer your question about victims of powerful men are not likely to report abuse. Sure, and if Geoff had been a rich powerful CEO all his life, that might foot. However, he's a firefighter and a state rep. Well, perhaps that's your idea of a "power house," I don't know.
I've been reading the posts on this. One of Kathy's relatives posted a rather lengthy post about Kathy and it was not, in any way, shape or form, complimentary at all. This poster even noted that Kathy & Geoff's oldest son has asked Kathy to quit airing dirty family linen on her Facebook page. I have no clue, again, if any of this is true - but the fact remains in my mind, there might (note the word "might") be more here than meets the eye.
And if you're not willing to concede this, there's no help for you.
To the woman-hater, this blog is heavy with female perpetrators so whoop - that doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteState Rep's are teflon - charges RARELY stick, paperwork disappears, and victims are threatened what will happen if their careers are damanged. They ARE the friends in high places for city, county, and state workers where charges are formed and followed through - or
ReplyDeletedropped.
Thank you for your support Blue Wall. The election is over. I have kept quiet long enough. I don't think the criminal case against Geoff will ever go to trial. He has had multiple continuances granted. I respect your blog and want to redirect some things, finally.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous is more than likely Geoff. I recognize his thread. He has posted to multiple web sites saying the same thing.
The relative he referenced is Geoff's sister who lives over 2000 miles away and has no idea what is going on here. She didn't even know that her brother had denied our daughter life saving surgery.
Finally, a woman who has been groomed by a batterer for years learns to not report. They believe they are the problem. They believe they deserve the physical, emotional, financial, sexual and verbal abuse. Anyone that says they know someone in an abusive relationship and it isn't hidden from the public is lying about their knowledge. And if they aren't lying then shame on them for allowing someone to be abused in front of them.
If you really want to know more about abuse, you can educate yourself. Read stories on the web: I have several on my blog, Read advocate websites, and read books. Talk to survivors, children of survivors and volunteer for a support group or shelter. There are also some great books out there to help you understand, although until you've lived it you will probably never really understand it. I'd like to recommend "Why does he do that? Inside the minds of angry and controlling men." by Lundy Bancroft, "The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans, and "When dad hurts mom" by Lundy Bancroft.
I pray for all of us and hope that we can all heal. I hope for the future and hope for our children that there will be better understanding and better support someday. That my children will never have to suffer abuse in their adult relationships.

Now that our children are all over 18, I can be more vocal about everything that has happened. I called 911 many times and didn't have anyone actually come to the house and take a report. Instead, they would just talk to him outside.
ReplyDeleteAbout the first actual "arrest" that occurred, when I called 911 I didn't want to say that Geoff had been physically violent because I didn't want him lose his job. I just wanted to be out of the marriage and get my things. Unfortunately, the 911 operator said they wouldn't come out unless there was violence. I just wanted my belongings out of my house. Geoff had already grabbed me by the hair, twisted my arm behind my back, threatened my step dad and threw me out of the house. I finally told the operator what had really happened. The police came, took photos of my red and bruised arm and arrested Geoff. The charges were dropped because Geoff claimed he asked me to leave and the house was his. (He had the right to use physical force to remove someone from his house.) Unfortunately, no one witnessed the request so it was my word against his as to whether he had asked me to leave.
The second charges were at Seattle Children's hospital. The hospital had asked him NOT to come to the property again, per our daughters' request. He agreed. Then he said he was coming. His photo was at every entrance and security was trying to watch for him. The social worker was sitting with my daughter and I waiting for her to be moved to a different room. She was called out of the room to the nurses desk in the hall and he came in. I was supposed to stand at the doorway to protect our daughter who was sobbing already because she knew he was on his way and she was scared. I didn't touch him, I just stood in his way. The social worker immediately called security and headed back to the door. In the mean time, Geoff shoved me repeatedly into the room and then back out to the doorway. He slammed the door on me repeatedly and eventually got it closed. The whole time the social worker was calmly talking to him trying to convince him to stop. He pulled the blinds to the room so no one could see in, leaned his body against the door so no one could come in, and yelled at our daughter for 5 minutes. Security came, doctors came, nurses, and the social worker. All were trying to get him to leave the room and let them in to see their patient. When he came out, he threatened the social worker and left. Our daughter was given an alias for the rest of her stays at Children's hospital, she was moved to a new room so he wouldn't know where she was and he was banned from the hospital permanently. Our daughter's sutures failed and she had to have another surgery. It took her 8 weeks to recover from the open wound. She couldn't get out of bed without help, she was in a wheel chair for several weeks, her wound had to be packed several times a day, she had a picc line that had to be accessed 3 times a day and my mom couldn't help out because she was going through chemo. I asked Commissioner Canada-Thurston (king county family court) for financial relief because of all of this and she said I need to get the documents from Seattle Children's hospital. Since I was representing myself, I agreed not knowing that the only way to get the documents was through a subpoena and the only way to get a subpoena was to have a trial set. After that, I couldn't find an attorney that would take the case so I gave up trying to get financial support from a man that made over $130,000 per year.
ReplyDeleteWhen he lost the election, child support and spousal support were cut in half. I couldn't afford an attorney because I had just taken 6 months off from work without pay to care for our daughter. Eventually the kids and I had to move into a small apartment because I lost the house I had purchased with the retirement money I got from the divorce. I eventually ended up homeless, with no retirement except a small pension that I will get from the teaching career I started after I divorced him.
