[MA] Massachusetts State Trooper Derrick Costa charged with domestic assault and battery this time.


[Massachusetts] State Trooper Derrick A. Costa’s arrest on a charge of domestic assault and battery revealed for the first time that he has also been suspended without pay since June 24 because of allegations of drug dealing, larceny, forgery and witness intimidation...

...“The Massachusetts State Police condemn any and all acts of domestic abuse. The behavior as alleged in the criminal complaints is disgraceful and stands in stark contrast to the values, integrity, and ideals that the Massachusetts State Police demand and embrace," State Police said in a statement...

...After police went to the Taunton home and arrested Costa, he told them that his wife initiated the physical altercation and that he only touched her... Officers described finding the wife with a red, swollen bruise under her eye and a series of older bruises and abrasions on her arms and legs. The police report states that the wife told officers that Costa had been violent with her in the past...

[Excerpts] A state trooper already facing a variety of charges was arrested Thursday night in Raynham on a domestic assault charge... Derrick Costa, 40, was arrested in connection with an assault that occurred in his residence, State Police said. He was scheduled to be arraigned yesterday in Taunton District Court. But Costa did not show up for his arraignment because, after being bailed from the Raynham police station overnight, he checked himself into Morton Hospital in Taunton... While at the hospital, the court issued a default warrant because of the missed appearance, Procopio said. Costa was taken into custody at the hospital and brought to the courthouse, according to State Police. He was arraigned yesterday afternoon and ordered held on $5,000 cash bail.... “The Massachusetts State Police condemn any and all acts of domestic abuse. [Excerpts] A suspended state trooper, already facing a multiple-count indictment for drug possession, forgery and embezzlement, sank into deeper legal trouble yesterday when he was charged with beating his wife, prosecutors said. Derrick Costa, 40, of Raynham was ordered held on $5,000 bail after pleading not guilty to assault and battery charges in Taunton District Court. According to a police report, Costa was arguing with his wife Thursday night... police said he got upset and allegedly punched her under her left eye and in the back of her head... Costa told police he was only defending himself after his wife attacked him. Following Costa’s booking, his brother posted $40 bail, and then Costa checked himself into Morton Hospital for an unknown reason. Costa missed his morning arraignment and was arrested again at the hospital and brought to court... Costa has been on leave since June 24, when a state police investigation turned up evidence of Costa’s alleged connection to several crimes... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] Already indicted on drug, forgery and larceny charges, a state trooper arrested Thursday on a domestic assault and battery charge will be allowed to attend an in-patient substance abuse treatment program in Florida if he posts $5,000 cash bail. The incident is the latest allegation against Trooper Derrick Costa... Costa had been scheduled for arraignment on the domestic assault and battery charge Friday morning in Taunton District Court, but failed to appear because he was rushed to Morton Hospital and Medical Center for an alcohol-related issue... "Taunton police arrived this morning (at the hospital) and took him into custody," [Attorney Earl] Shepherd said. State police said they coordinated the Taunton police response to the hospital. The suspended state trooper had previously been scheduled to leave Friday to attend a 30-day drug treatment program at Unity of Palm Beach in Florida... Raynham police arrested Costa Thursday night at his brother’s home in Taunton on a charge of assault and battery... After police went to the Taunton home and arrested Costa, he told them that his wife initiated the physical altercation and that he only touched her... Officers described finding the wife with a red, swollen bruise under her eye and a series of older bruises and abrasions on her arms and legs. The police report states that the wife told officers that Costa had been violent with her in the past... District Court Judge Paul McCallum set bail at $5,000 cash and imposed a number of conditions for Costa to honor if he posts bail. If he posts bail, Costa must abide by the terms of a restraining order the court granted to his wife Friday, abstain from illicit drug and alcohol consumption and be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings. He will be allowed to undergo drug treatment in Florida after posting bail as long as he abides by the court-ordered terms of release and signs necessary releases with the Probation Department. During bail arguments, the prosecution said it considered Costa to be a flight risk... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] State Trooper Derrick A. Costa’s arrest on a charge of domestic assault and battery revealed for the first time that he has also been suspended without pay since June 24 because of allegations of drug dealing, larceny, forgery and witness intimidation. Costa ... has been a state trooper for 15 years... When Raynham police went to Costa’s home Thursday and investigated the assault and battery allegations, it was not the first time officers were sent there... Raynham police were there Thursday night after state police asked them to do a well-being check. Costa’s wife, according to police, had called Trooper James Massari about an altercation she and her husband had earlier in the night. Massari, in turn, contacted Raynham police, according to a police report. Massari, who works in the state police Employee Assistance Unit, testified during the arraignment that he has been working with Costa to help him overcome drug and alcohol abuse issues... Costa was indicted July 25 by a grand jury on eight counts of larceny of more than $250, five counts of forgery of a document, five counts of uttering by false writing, two counts of conspiracy to violate the drug laws, and one count each of unlawful distribution of a class B drug, unlawful possession of an opiate drug with intent to distribute and witness intimidation...
