A Deptford Township police officer was arrested for simple assault early Monday morning after he allegedly drove a marked police car more than eight miles to Camden County and became involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Scheduled to patrol Deptford Township during the midnight shift on Sunday night, Ptl. Michael Walter James drove to his girlfriend's condominium on Main Street in Voorhees Township... James, who was wearing his Deptford Township uniform... the two began struggling over her pocketbook... the pocketbook cut the woman's finger... A Deptford officer retrieved the police cruiser from Voorhees. James was suspended with pay, in accordance with a policy set by the state Attorney General's Office regarding police officers involved in domestic violence... The officer, who has been with the department since 2004, also had to turn in his service weapon... If found guilty of simple assault, James could be fired... He also faces disciplinary action stemming from an Internal Affairs investigation into the incident...
