YONKERS - Neighbors are stunned today by the death of an off-duty New York City police officer who died of a single gunshot wound to his head at his Yonkers home. Joseph John, 29, of Whitman Road was pronounced dead at 11 last night... John was a three-year member of the NYPD assigned to the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx. An NYPD spokesman said he would not issue any statements until Yonkers police conclude the investigation. Yonkers police had responded to a 911 call from John's family, which had heard the gunshot, said Capt. Fred Hellthaler, Yonkers police. "His wife and his mother were in the house at the time," Hellthaler said. The gunshot appeared to be self-inflicted and police found a handgun at the scene, but Yonkers police are still investigating the circumstances... "There's a lot of questions and not a lot of information yet," Hellthaler said this morning. "We need to speak to the victim's mother and wife, and do ballistics and wait for the medical examiner's report."

  1. He comes from a great loving family. He is a newlywed and should have been celebrating a happy Christmas this year with family. It saddens me to hear this news displayed all over the tv as a suicide. He came from great roots and I cannot believe that this can be anything more or anything less than an accident. My prayers extend to his loving family in their time of need.

Ciby, you will forever be in our hearts and minds.
