A SPRINGFIELD POLICE OFFICER PLEADED INNOCENT LAST WEEK TO CHARGES HE REPEATEDLY VIOLATED CONDITIONS OF RELEASE ON CHARGES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. OFFICER WILLIAM O. DANIELS, 36, OF LONDONDERRY, HAD BEEN FORBIDDEN FROM CONTACTING HIS ESTRANGED WIFE, LAURA, BUT COURT RECORDS SHOWED THAT DANIELS CONTINUED TO CALL HER. DANIELS IS CHARGED WITH CALLING HER 60 TIMES IN ONE NIGHT, CALLING HER EVERY TWO OR THREE MINUTES. IN ALL, DANIELS WAS ARRAIGNED ON FIVE COUNTS OF VIOLATING THE COURT CONDITIONS THAT HE HAVE NO CONTACT WITH LAURA DANIELS OR THAT HE ABUSE OR HARASS HER... DANIELS HAD EARLIER PLEADED INNOCENT TO CHARGES HE ASSAULTED HIS WIFE WHEN SHE WAS TRYING TO CALL 911. HE ALLEGEDLY GRABBED HER AND PUT HER INTO A POLICE HOLD OR RESTRAINT. LAURA DANIELS HAD FILED FOR DIVORCE FROM DANIELS IN FEBRUARY, BUT THE COUPLE HAD REMAINED LIVING TOGETHER WITH THEIR DAUGHTER IN SOUTH LONDONDERRY... SPRINGFIELD POLICE CHIEF DOUGLAS JOHNSTON SAID DANIELS REMAINED ON THE FORCE, DESPITE THE PENDING CRIMINAL CHARGES AND THE NEW CHARGES THAT HE FAILED TO FOLLOW THE COURT'S CONDITIONS FOR HIS RELEASE. JOHNSTON SAID DANIELS HAD BEEN PLACED ON DESK DUTY... ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS, SPRINGFIELD POLICE OFFICER WILLIAM FRANK TOLD DANIELS NOT TO CONTACT HIS WIFE BUT FRANK LATER REFUSED TO PROVIDE A WRITTEN STATEMENT TO THE VERMONT STATE POLICE ABOUT THAT ORDER TO TROOPER BENJAMIN THERRIEN.

COP MAKES PLEA DEAL IN DOMESTIC ASSAULT CASE

A SPRINGFIELD POLICE OFFICER HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO TWO CHARGES HE VIOLATED COURT-IMPOSED CONDITIONS WHEN HE REPEATEDLY TRIED TO CONTACT HIS ESTRANGED WIFE AFTER HE WAS CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. WILLIAM DANIELS, 36, RECEIVED TWO THREE-TO-SIX-MONTH SUSPENDED JAIL SENTENCES AND WAS ORDERED TO COMPLETE THE STATE-SPONSORED BATTERER INTERVENTION PROGRAM. DANIELS WILL REMAIN ON PROBATION FOR A YEAR. THE UNDERLYING CHARGE OF DOMESTIC ASSAULT WAS DISMISSED AS PART OF A PLEA AGREEMENT, ALONG WITH THREE OTHER CHARGES OF VIOLATING CONDITIONS OF RELEASE... DANIELS PUT HIS ESTRANGED WIFE IN A POLICE HOLD AND THREW HER CELL PHONE INTO THE WOODS. ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS, DANIELS CALLED HIS ESTRANGED WIFE 60 TIMES ONE NIGHT. [SPRINGFIELD POLICE CHIEF DOUGLAS] JOHNSTON SAID HE HAD CONFIDENCE IN DANIELS AS A POLICE OFFICER AND ONCE THE INVESTIGATION WAS COMPLETED, HE WOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH DANIELS HANDLING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES DESPITE THE CRIMINAL CHARGES. "I DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH HIM HANDLING THOSE," THE CHIEF SAID. WINDHAM COUNTY DEPUTY STATE'S ATTORNEY ELLEN KRYGER SAID WEDNESDAY DANIELS HAD "DONE THE RIGHT THING" TO RESOLVE THE CHARGES. SHE SAID THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CHARGE WAS DROPPED AS PART OF PLEA NEGOTIATIONS. SHE SAID SHE EVALUATED THE MERITS OF THE CASE AND DECIDED TO DROP THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CHARGE... THE SPRINGFIELD CHIEF SAID THERE WAS NO DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST ANOTHER SPRINGFIELD POLICE OFFICER, SGT. WILLIAM FRANK, WHO REFUSED TO PROVIDE A REPORT TO THE VERMONT STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING OFFICER ABOUT WHAT HE KNEW ABOUT THE INCIDENT. JOHNSTON SAID THE STATE POLICE COULD HAVE SUBPOENAED FRANK IF THEY NEEDED HIS INFORMATION.

This article is one sided, and does nothing but present a incomplete portrait of the facts. People should know both sides before passing judgment; and others should not be writing articles to which they do not have all the facts. Although, it was a good attempt at getting a Pulitzer prize.

ReplyDeleteA situation like this gets taken way out of context because he was a police officer. And, I agree that it was one sided. You didnt share with us the proof that there was violence involved. She could have just cried wolf because she was mad. And because he was a cop, it got alot of attention.

ReplyDeleteyes he is when I heard about this I raised hell with jim mullens the town manager. I have a park and rec meeting at a select board members house and ill be bringing it up. oh and the town manager never responded
