[Excerpts] A retired Tacoma police officer was sentenced Friday to nearly 20 years in prison for a litany of child sex crimes. In November, Lee William Giles Jr. and his girlfriend, Maureen Wear, each pleaded guilty to first-degree child rape, second-degree child rape, first-degree child molestation and third-degree assault of a child. The charges involved young relatives. Sixty-one-year-old Giles received 19 years, 8 months after pleading guilty late last year to first- and second-degree child rape, first-degree child molestation and third-degree assault. His girlfriend, Maureen Wear, pleaded guilty to the same charges. She will be sentenced at a later date. From the very beginning, the allegations against Giles were stunning. Prosecutors say Giles repeatedly raped his own girlfriend's young son over a period of years, videotaped the crimes, and that Wear – the victim's own mother – was involved in the attacks. Court papers indicated that other female family members were also victimized... He frequently visited schools and appeared on television and radio during a 30-year police career... Giles appeared with Harvey, a talking motorcycle, in a grade school program designed to make police less scary, and was involved in the TV program "Behind the Shield"...

[Excerpts] Retired Tacoma police officer Lee William Giles Jr. will have 19 years to ponder the demon that drove him to molest children who trusted him.... Giles, 63, made no statement... Originally, he was charged with 26 crimes. By the time he pleaded guilty last November, the charges had been reduced to single counts: first-degree child rape, second-degree child rape, first-degree child molestation and third-degree assault... The boy gave a handwritten statement to the court. He stood silently while his attorney read it aloud... "What would I be like if I was normal?" he wrote. Giles and Wear showed no visible reaction to the boy's statement. They were equally stoic when the boy's father gave a letter to the court. He explained how he first learned of the years of sexual abuse his son endured. The father was driving. The boy blurted out the secret. The father plowed into a parked car... Molested since the age of 7, the boy had never been taught to brush his teeth or take showers. He thought sex with family members was normal. He'd been drugged for years, on the pretext of calming his hyperactivity. The real reason was to keep him docile. "How do you undo that?" the father asked... The boy and his father have sued Giles, Wear and the City of Tacoma for $15 million. They argue that the city, Giles' employer, should have known about his acts. Wear also worked for the Police Department as a civilian employee from 1997 to 1999, when she was fired for reasons unrelated to the criminal case...

[Excerpts] ...Detectives also wrote in court documents that they found videotapes showing Giles and Wear raping and molesting the boy, described as developmentally disabled, and molesting two girls related to Giles. The three ranged in age from 3 to 16 at the time of the abuse, according to the court filings. Deputy Prosecutor John M. Sheeran said he agreed to the plea deal partly to spare the victims from having to testify in court. "There would have been a lot of graphic evidence introduced had the case gone to trial," Sheeran said. "The victims' families are supportive of this resolution"...
