SUSPECTED HIT MAN BACK IN JAIL AFTER SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Detroit -- A self-described hit man facing charges in the slaying of the wife of a police officer returned Friday to the Wayne County Jail after he had attempted suicide. Vincent Smothers, 28, was treated at a local hospital after he was found hanging in a common area near his cell Dec. 26, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Smothers is charged with shooting Rose Cobb, wife of Detroit Police Officer David Cobb, as she sat in a van on the day after Christmas in 2007. Smothers said it was arranged by Cobb, who was never charged. Earlier this year, a judge in Detroit refused to throw out Smothers' confession, saying there was nothing illegal about the tactics used by police to get the confession in April 2008. Cobb hanged himself last year. Smothers also has been charged with fatally shooting eight people in six separate murder cases. He told police he was paid $60,000 for working as a hit man in 2006 and 2007.

Self-professed hit man Vincent Smothers, who police said claimed he killed a Detroit police officer's wife, was returned to the Wayne County Jail on Friday following treatment at a local hospital for injuries he received from a suicide attempt. Smothers, 28, was found hanging in an area in the jail Dec. 26 by jail personnel. Smothers, who was under constant surveillance by county sheriff's deputies while hospitalized, is being held in the jail on 28 charges -- including 13 charges of first-degree murder. One case involved the slaying of Rose Cobb, the wife of David Cobb, a Detroit police sergeant who eventually committed suicide in a Sterling Heights park. Smothers was arrested in 2008. He last appeared in court in October. In another case, Smothers confessed in a written statement to being involved in a 2007 quadruple killing on Runyon Street in Detroit. Davontae Sanford, now 16, was convicted in that shooting. Sanford is now appealing to get a new trial. Smothers was called to testify in a hearing in July for Sanford, but he kept silent, asserting his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. [LINK]

  1. Davontae Sanford is guilty and the 37 to 90 years he got is still not enough, why would he tell police he went into the house after this crime happened but also got out before police got there? Are you serious, they responded within the hour? Give me a break, his retarded self needs to sit in that cell and think about all the loved ones who still mourn to this day and are unable to function fully. If Smothers is involved, he knows it was more than just trying to rob someone, and the family wants answers. As far as it being a reputed drug house, give me a break! BELIEVE ME, IT WAS FAR FROM THAT, the occupant just liked to grow it for his own personal use. Not to uncommon, is it? By the way, thoe victims were my friends!!

[Excerpts] THE FAMILY OF ROSE COBB HAS A SIMPLE REQUEST: A TRIAL FOR THE MAN WHO CONFESSED TO GUNNING DOWN THEIR LOVED ONE... YET FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS, THE MAN ACCUSED OF THE SHOOTING, VINCENT SMOTHERS, HAS SAT IN A WAYNE COUNTY JAIL CELL CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE MURDER. SMOTHERS, A SELF-PROFESSED HIT MAN, TRIED TO HANG HIMSELF IN JAIL IN DECEMBER, FURTHER DELAYING A TRIA... "WHY IS SMOTHERS GETTING ALL THIS TLC, AND IT'S LIKE HER LIFE DIDN'T MEAN CRAP?" SAID COBB'S SISTER, SHERYL GARY. "WE'LL NEVER HAVE ANY FORM OF CLOSURE -- IF THERE IS SUCH A THING -- UNTIL THIS IS DONE... SOMETIMES I DREAM THAT SHE'S STILL ALIVE AND WE ALL SAY TO HER: 'WE THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD,' "GARY SAID. "OTHER TIMES, I'M JUST DRIVING ALONG AND IT JUST HITS ME SO HARD. AND I START WONDERING, 'WHY?'... NO ONE QUESTIONED HIS COMPETENCY WHEN HE SAID HE COMMITTED ALL THOSE MURDERS... DID THEY SAY, 'LET'S SEE IF THIS MAN IS CRAZY' WAY BACK THEN?... WE WANT HIM TRIED AND CONVICTED... IT'S BEEN GOING ON THREE YEARS NOW SINCE ROSE WAS KILLED AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. THE MORE TIME THAT GOES BY MAKES IT LOOK LIKE IT HAS BEEN SWEPT UNDER THE RUG"...
