[Excerpts] A Douglas County woman accused of poisoning her husband [Jonathon Allen, a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy] by putting a toxic plant in his salad has agreed to a plea deal. Lisa Allen had faced charges of first degree murder but now will be sentenced for second degree assault. Her attorney said she was framed and that it is an incredibly complex case where not everything is as it seems... According to court documents, the couple had been together for 14 years when Lisa began making plans to leave her husband after she says he abused her... Horticulturist Leah Crews works at the nursery where investigators said Lisa purchased the plants. "She specifically asked for Foxglove and wanted one with large leaves on it," said Crews... When asked if he forgave his wife, Jonathon said, "I do." When asked why, he said, "Because I'm supposed to and holding back hate doesn't help anything." Lisa Allen will be sentenced in May. She faces 3 to 6 years in jail. [Full article here]

[Excerpts] Jefferson County Deputy Jon Allen admits there was some trouble in his marriage. He says his wife Lisa Allen was depressed, had threatened suicide and was spending a lot of time with a mutual male friend, still he says "I was committed and thought we were going to grow old together." That is, until he realized his wife was planning his untimely death... "I didn't know if I was going to die but I can't even tell you how to comprehend what's going through your mind at that point," he says. He says he doubled over in stomach cramps and his heart was racing. A hospital toxicology test later confirmed he had been poisoned by the Fox Glove...Lisa Allen's attorney didn't want to comment on camera, but says just because she pleaded guilty doesn't mean she confesses to any wrongdoing, and there's more to this case than meets the eye. Lisa Allen will be sentenced May 14th. [Full article here]

DEPUTY: I FORGIVE WIFE ACCUSED OF TRYING TO POISON ME: Douglas County Woman Filed For Divorce Weeks After Arrest

[Excerpts] Jefferson County Deputy Jonathan Allen told 7NEWS he forgives his wife despite allegations she tried to poison him by spiking his dinner salad with potentially deadly foxglove plant leaves in 2008. As the deputy left his Highlands Ranch home to work as a police-dog handler Wednesday afternoon, he said he will attend his wife Lisa's May 14 sentencing on felony assault involving drugging a victim in Douglas County District Court... Just weeks after her arrest, Lisa Allen filed for divorce. The couple has a young daughter, and the divorce case resolution has been postponed until after the wife's sentencing... "It's definitely created empathy in my heart for other victims," the deputy added. "And it's affected how thorough I am when I do my job. And I want to make sure I do it to the best of my ability."... About an hour after dinner, Jonathan Allen said he began having heart palpitations and stomach cramps and was wheezing, the affidavit said. The next day, the husband met with a Douglas County sheriff's investigator. He wept and was apprehensive as he explained that he suspected his wife had tried to poison him... The deputy went to a Littleton hospital where tests showed he had digitalis, a chemical from the foxglove, in his system... Investigators arrested Lisa Allen that day. She told a detective that she and her husband had been having marital problems for several years, the affidavit said. Lisa Allen said she was taking Prozac for depression... Lisa Allen said she'd bought a plant at a nursery on Federal Boulevard before coming home to make the spaghetti and salad dinner that night... But when the detective showed her photographs of the two foxglove plants on the couple's deck, the wife said she had never seen them before, the affidavit stated. Yet an assistant manager at Wilmore Nursery on County Line Road in Littleton told 7NEWS Wednesday that she provided investigators with a receipt showing Lisa Allen bought the foxglove plants there... Lisa Allen was initially charged with premeditated first-degree attempted murder, domestic violence and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon... Her defense attorney, Scott Robinson, said his client was facing 48 years in prison. Yet, 21 months into the investigation, the wife pleaded guilty to the felony assault for drugging a victim, and the district attorney dismissed the more serious charges, according to court records. Robinson said although Lisa Allen pleaded guilty, she did not admit to poisoning her husband. [Full article here]

  1. He beat his wife almost every day and when he found out she was going to leave, he had her arrested and framed her for attempted murder. It's a crime but one that has been commited by a police officer.

    1. I'm the daughter of him. He did not try to do anything to her. He's the most loving man, and the best father I've ever had.

  2. I watched the 2 news videos I came across and something seemed wrong. When I read that Lisa said she was framed I was open minded. But this seems to close the question:

I can't imagine how to explain that but...

It is high time that someone take a serious look at the CRIME behind the crime that so many of the wives of abusive police officers face. I have known this particular young woman for all of her life, she came from a very loving and caring family and changed so much after she became the wife of this SICK man. He really is in the wrong profession he should be on stage for he is truly good at the stage playing. He has cheated on his wife, been abusive to her for a long time. Rest asure that he now has her where he wants to and can go on with his new woman but his spots wont change and in time he with abuse yet another woman. The Jefferson County Sheriff should really take a serious look at what is behind the actions of this man and releive him of the badge and the protection it seems to have offered him. He is a blemish to what is a good profession for many.

    Were they given polygraph tests?

  5. We're discussing this on facebook.

"He does not sound sincere - and I'm pretty intuitive. And why would an officer in a bad marriage NOT be concerned, as he says, that his wife was looking up poisonous plants? If he framed Lisa though, he framed her good - with the plant lady saying she sold Lisa the foxglove. And if she was framed and didn't fight the charges there isn't much I have a right to read into this. I know in my heart that something IS wrong - but without more facts it's hard to know what it is. Maybe it will come out later - or in the comments on the blog. YAH KNOW, if she DID intend on killing him, why would she leave footprints on the computer, publicly buy the poison, announce a special dinner, and leave the poison plant in plain view on the patio. A little over the top (and hard to swallow). It's possible and may have happened, but it's strange."

  6. I was doing dishes, thinking.

    She wasn't framed.

The thing that wasn't right was the exaggerated innocence of the deputy.

Lots of people can understand wanting to be rid of someone, but murder is not okay.

I'm glad that he didn't die.

I watched his taped interview and found that he was evasive with his eye contact, which means to me that he is hiding something. He is not innocent in this situation at all. I am sure that if Lisa did infact intend to harm her husband (if you can call him that) she was wrong, but like so many others was afaid that there was no way out of the bad situation. There is so much more to this that the interview with him showed. He covered up a good deal of evidence on the home computer, told lies, cheated on wife (he is planning on getting married again in June and he's not even divorced yet.
Has stalked the extended family in many different ways and made off handed threats. Don't judge unless you know the true facts. Lisa did wrong, but why. Watch out the next Mrs. Allen

He says the court case is holding up the divorce; however, Lisa has tried to get him to sign the divorce papers numerous times and he refuses. Of course, that doesn't stop him from planning to marry another woman this summer. Huh...strange.

Also, he has ADMITTED TO TAMPERING WITH EVIDENCE by deleting specific and certain parts of their computer hard drive, and guess what...nothing happened. They should have thrown the case out at that point and charged HIM with a crime. Instead, let's send an innocent woman to jail and subject her young daughter to this man's abusive tendencies. Good idea!

The employee at the nursery could not identify Ms. Allen when first questioned. Jonathan Allen has destroyed evidence - isn't that a crime? Jonathan claims Ms. Allen has a boyfriend - where is he? Doesn't seem he has ever existed anywhere except Jonathan's delusional jealousy. Yet, Jonathan has been openly dating a series of women since his wife's arrest. He is now engaged and planning a wedding - but he is still married. Strange, curious events. Has the wrong one been charged?

First Question that comes to my mind is, who looks at the leaves in their salad? Does anyone? I know I don't I just eat it, so how would he know what kind of leaves where in the salad. I think that he is very good at covering up things, and has a way of planting (no pun intended) evidence. I think there is a lot more to this story.

  12. True dat. Especially when he says that he didn't think anything of her looking up poisonous plants.

(And what spouse - especially law enforcement - thinks nothing of someone looking up poisonous plants? I know better.)

Well we have yet another example of how the court system has allowed a so called officer of the law to get away with his abusive, lying ways and the abused wife pays the for the crime he himself has set in motion. When will the courts start looking into the cause of so many of this type of thing happening. Lisa did wrong but why and why should she have to spend 4 1/2 years of her life locked away from her family, why did her father have to stand and plea for help for his daughter and the REAL CRIMINAL goes on with his life as if he is a saint. PLEASE LETS START LOOKING AT THESE CASES IN REAL LIGHT WITH NO SHADOWS.

well he'll probably start escalating his abusive behavior then maybe in 20 years they'll actually DO something to this lying cheating POS.

Drew peterson anyone? think they can do what they want then frame up the women. are there any honest LE anymore?

Yes there are alot of good and honorble Police Officers out ther doing the job that they are suppose to do, but then they too must face the miscarriage of justice by the court system. But most important is that they should start taking a deeper look into the abusive Police Officer, the control he has over his victim (wife and family). They know all the safe houses so there is no place for the wife to go. They can't report the abuse to the police as so many of the buddies of the guilty officer just laugh it off so to speak. The wife (or woman) involved in the situation just gives up or in Lisa's case as in so many others end up taking the wrong way. For everyone's information the trace of poison in Jonathan's system was so small it wouldn't have hurt a small animal, yet alone an big A------

  16. Don't get me wrong. This stinks. But if she doesn't fight it then no one can do anything for her. If she is innocent I don't blame her for not fighting it either. If she is innocent she might not believe she could win. She could be tired of everything...

But if she doesn't fight it no one can assume she is innocent of this either. The law is working with what it has.

YES there needs to be help - PEOPLE will have to make that happen. Waiting for police unions to make it easier to get justice regarding offending officers will not work. Power (almost) never relinquishes itself willingly.

  17. I didn't mean to infer police unions are not "people." :) I meant community.

There are always two sides to everything, and in this case the only one being investigated was Lisa. I have known her for all her life; she wasn't driven to these actions for no reason. Yes, what she did was wrong, but being an abusive husband isn't right either.

  19. AnonymousMay 17, 2010

wow. a lot of internet sleuths out there. the woman is guilty as sin. the fact that she isn't a criminal mastermind, and thus set in motion a completely obvious and hapless plan to off her husband, isn't an excuse for her actions. don't know if the man was abusive or not, really just a lot of empty accusations right now, but even if he was a total a--, well that's not an excuse. We really need to stop letting these crazy women get away with whatever they want. We are like one step away from sanctioning revenge killings. I understand the stress that they must face when trapped in an abusive relationship, but at some point, we still have to expect them to abide by the law.

I agree with you that when the wife takes or attempts to take the wrong action (usually because she is at the end of her rope) she shouldn't get off as is nothing wrong was done. But being put behind bars and yanked away from family and friends who could possibly help isn't the answer either. Women in that situation needs counseling and help in more humain ways. They (as she is now doing) sit locked up while the abuser and lying cheat is out living it up and starting another life all over with yet another potential victim, and telling the young child that mommy was a nasty lady who would kill them if she was out. Yet the young child while with mom in joint custody till sentencing cried, screamed and didn't want to be with the daddy. Did anyone with any common sense take a look (a good look) at the child, talk to the child and understand the real truth from what she was saying and experiencing. There is an evil, abusive man out there people and he will strike again be sure of that

Why hasn't anyone looked into the fact that her parents have been slandering Mr Allen for years- long before she tried to kill him. They have interfered with the investigation, lied about the facts and spewed venom at anyone who did not believe in their daughters total innocence. Her apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  23. GEE, that sounds like a recent double murder suicide here where a twisted deputy shot his in-laws and then himself. He blamed his in-laws for him having to murder his daughter's grandparents right in front of her. Check your soul because you are sporting a sick mentality. We are grown ups. Words are words. What do you want to see happen? Do you want them to go to jail for not liking this man? I'm a parent. There is something that perhaps you don't know, unless of course you're...

I don't know who you are making a statment like you did regarding the slandering of the A....who for years beat, belittled and drove a wedge between His wife and her family and friends (which by the way is what wife beaters do). I beleive that you are probably the next Mrs. Allen and that is why you are so strong in you finger pointing at Lisa's family and friends who have did noting but attempt to help her in her weaked condition (mentally and physically).
I do know that what was said about Mr. Allen (I hate to call him Officer as it is so harmful for the good ones) in 100% true.

I would look out for myself if I were you. Just look what has happened to all the Drew Peterson wives. You too may become a victim and soon. As may his daughter.

  25. Deputy’s wife sentenced
    Our Colorado News, Highlands Ranch
    By Chris Michlewicz
    Friday, May 14, 2010

A Highlands Ranch woman will spend the next four and a half years behind bars after being convicted in a plot in which authorities say she tried to kill her husband.

Lisa Allen, 42, was sentenced for second-degree assault after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors that spared her from a more serious charge of attempted first-degree murder. She faced up to six years in prison for the assault charge, but Douglas County District Court Judge Vincent White handed down the 54-month sentence May 14 in a courtroom at the Robert A. Christensen Justice Center in Castle Rock.

Lisa Allen was accused of trying to kill her husband, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy Jonathan Allen, in June 2008 when she put leaves from a toxic foxglove plant in his dinner salad. Jonathan Allen later discovered Internet searches for plants that can be potentially lethal to humans. He ingested some of the leaves and reported heart palpitations and severe stomach cramps.

Lisa Allen’s defense attorney, Scott Robinson, said his client’s husband was abusive. She has since filed for divorce.

Lisa Allen was remanded into custody and began serving her sentence at the end of the hearing. She faces three years of parole upon her release.
