Fayetteville - A former Elkins police officer has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of unauthorized release of the criminal history of a Springdale man. Former Cpl. John Brown was sentenced to 42 months of supervised probation as part of a plea deal in which misdemeanor charges of terroristic threatening and harassing communications were dropped. Brown also will lose his law enforcement certification. Brown admitted he looked up the criminal history of a man who lived in a home where his estranged wife was allowing their children to stay - then telling his wife about it. Brown was placed on paid leave when he was arrested March 25. He was fired April 19. [LINK]

John Brown surrendered Wednesday and was released on $3,500 bond. He denies the allegations... [Excerpts] ...Officer John P. Brown is facing felony charges of unauthorized release or disclosure of criminal history information for allegedly pulling the criminal histories of a Springdale couple and giving the information to his wife. He is also facing misdemeanor charges for sending threatening text messages to his wife, and threatening the Springdale couple over the phone... According to the report, Officer Brown threatened [the man], and then threatened his own wife. Officer Brown admits to accessing the criminal history information on the couple and disclosing the information to his wife... He also admitted to continuously texting his wife, asking who she was around, and who was around his children... Officer Brown says the allegations made by his wife are in response to his desire to pursue full custody of their children, and says that he is entertaining the idea of filing a civil lawsuit against the Washington County Sheriff's Department for defamation of character. He plans to plea not guilty on all charges at his April 7th hearing... [Full article here]
