A former Jacksonville police officer will spend the summer in jail after pleading guilty Wednesday to using a vehicle as a weapon against his estranged wife and brother-in-law.

Arnold Rice Sharkey, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, while a second count was dropped. Along with a six-month jail sentence, Sharkey received 2 1/2 years' probation and fines. He received credit for 75 days he spent in jail.

Sharkey, a cop since at least 1989, was arrested in March and then resigned from the force after being accused of using a vehicle to ram a vehicle occupied by his estranged wife, Victoria, and her brother on New Berlin Road.

During the incident, Sharkey's vehicle flipped into a ditch and he was briefly hospitalized before being taken to jail. There were no other injuries. [LINK]
