A former police officer who has faced criminal allegations in the past is now charged with felony malicious wounding of the mother of one of his children, according to court documents. Cardwell, stated in a motion to set bond that Martin acted in self-defense and that he "suffered serious injury at the hands and teeth of the alleged victim and was not the aggressor." Martin was released Thursday on $10,000 bond. Cardwell's bond motion, filed in court April 27, states that Martin was working three jobs, including as a criminal-justice instructor at Centura and as a counselor... In Martin's earlier case, he was charged in September 2008 with giving false reports to law-enforcement officials... and the charge later was dismissed after he agreed to several conditions, including that he resign from the Police Department... He resigned April 1, 2009, ending more than five years of employment with the police force... [Full article here]
