Former sheriff deputy indicted
Gilroy Dispatch
By Michael Van Cassell
Dec 14, 2007
A grand jury indicted former San Benito County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Rodrigues, and a warrant was issued Thursday for his arrest, District Attorney Candice Hooper confirmed. Rodrigues' whereabouts as of press time Thursday remained unknown... Sheriff Curtis Hill said he couldn't discuss the indictment or the search for Rodrigues, but said he wanted to apologize to the residents of San Benito County. Rodrigues worked for the San Benito County Sheriff's Office for 25 years. In early November, Hill announced that Rodrigues was "no longer employed by the County of San Benito." Rodrigues was under investigation for two rape allegations, violations of a court order to prevent domestic violence, stalking and intimidating a victim or witness, authorities have said. Those allegations surfaced in September and investigations were completed in October, the sheriff's office announced at the time. Hooper impaneled a criminal grand jury Monday, and proceedings were held through Wednesday. "There is an indictment, and there is an arrest warrant to assist in the apprehension of him," Hooper said... Dispatchers, including those in South County, issued a "be on the lookout" for Rodrigues, described his possible vehicles and told law enforcement to "approach with caution." Dispatchers also said Rodrigues was to meet deputies at 11 a.m. Thursday at the San Benito County Jail, but failed to show... "I apologize for the community even having to be exposed to this," Hill said. "The men and women of this organization - we work hard to maintain that public trust, and it's embarrassing"... Rodrigues is the same deputy who shot a drugged, unarmed man in June...

Dec 14, 2007
Sheriff Curtis Hill said Mike Rodrigues knows he is wanted, District Attorney Candice Hooper still declined to discuss specific charges and the indicted ex-deputy's whereabouts remained unknown as of press time Friday... "The clock's ticking," Hill said. "We'll see what he decides to do"... Hooper said she has been directed not to disclose the charges against Rodrigues and cited California Penal Code that states: "Every district attorney, clerk, judge, or peace officer who, except by issuing or in executing a search warrant or warrant of arrest for a felony, willfully discloses the fact of the warrant prior to execution for the purpose of preventing the search or seizure of property or the arrest of any person shall be punished by imprisonment in state prison or in a county jail for not exceeding one year"... An expert on open records law, however, disagreed with that interpretation of the law.... Attorney Jim Ewert said the public has a constitutional right to know what charges have been leveled against Rodrigues...

  1. how can the charges be baseless.. i think officers rodrigues attorney has some issues understanding the charges... it is clear to most, that mike has led a charmed life in san benito county.. his father former supervisior ron rodrigues has has a major roll in getting previous charges dropped on his son... curtis hill has given special treatment to mike, even during his flight from arrest.. 1000miles away... since when is sally street a 1000miles away.. and talking with the court clerk thurs morning and fleeing before officers could get to the court.. less than 100' from their office.. curtis hill should hold a news conference and answer some questions... tell the citizens you didn't know of mikes problems... just look at his record, oh wait i guess mike probably wrote his own record.. remember he has been put on leave for using police computers for personal use... like finding victims... san benito county, ron rodrigues and the board of supervisors, the hollister police department should all be held accountable for mike's actions over the last 25 years... where does a women go, certainly not to the local law enforcement boys club.. how many witness and victims did mike threaten, how many charges dropped. mikes been to the grand jury before, arrested before, and then the witness changes her mind and won't testify.. mike should get at least 25 years... the amount of time he was able to terrorize the communtity and his father should offer a public apology for helping this animal escape so many times before...

  2. good morning san benito county... hello mike rodrigues, curtis hill, and you to da hooper... let's see how it's going for you today. mikes attorney is on record saying he will ask for all charges to be dismissed. i think he needs help.
in all i've read recently, i havn't seen where the grand jury is hearing testamony on the stalking charges, the recent rape in nov, and the threatening of the 14 year old son of his most recent know victim.. oh yes and the wrongful death of his shooting victim.. mike your attorney has his work cut out for him. i hope your fathers help, and bail money, don't get you off this time. major prison time is what you need, along with some mental health support... the local press should give us more coverage, and curtis hill should hold a press conference, to explain how he couldn't find you.. also i believe the women who helped you elude police should be brought in a booked for aiding a fugitive. let's see curtis get his act together and show his ability to take action. well teflon mike it looks like your going to have your day in court. i'm willing to bet it will be a packed house. i know a few former victims who will be there to see you squirm. the only chance you have is that district attorney hooper is as incompident and your attorney. let's just hope the attorney general monitors this show and sees that justice is finally served.. bye bye bye mike

  3. attention citizens of hollister and surrounding areas. mike rodrigues is on the loose. you ask how can this be. he fails to turn himself in as agreed, and runs from the court house when he is faced with arrest. officer rodrigues is allowed to turn himself in without a new bail hearing, walk out in less than 1 hour. folks you try that, run, hide out, walk in and walk out. somehow i don't think so. his female accomplice, should be charged with harboring a fugitive, is not even interviewed. the idea of good police work doesn't even enter my mind. mike's friends and the local good ole boys club, don't want to arrest anyone else, they want as little attention to this case as possible. i think san benito county, curtis hill, former sheriff harvey nyland, former supervisor and mikes father ron rodrigues should all be held accountable for allowing this predator lose on our county, and it's citizen.. look at the arrest record of officer rodrigues, previous grand jury inditement, monterey county arrest etc. what is the status of the most current rape charges, the stalking charges, and the pending lawsuit for wrongful death. citizens have a right to know what is happening in their community. our local paper should ask these questiona and print some responses. curtis hill cancelled his scheduled press conference, and made a statement to the newpaper, he was happy no one was hurt and that mike turned himself in. lets hear from him how he didn't bring mike up sooner, clean house so to speak. i would really like to know how the san benito sheriff's office and the officers serving the community can look the citizens in the face. they must be blind to allow an officer to continue these type of actions for 25 years. well hopefully it will end soon. mike has said he will prove himself innocent of all charges. well mike there appear to be more charges on the way. you should start making penpals at soledad, or maybe folsom. one can only hope

  4. You all say the lawer needs help. Why? It is entirely possible that all the charges will be droppped if the same DA that let him go last time for shooting an unarmed man in the back with a witness? The lawyer knows this. So who needs help? The system maybe?

  5. Wow, I remember this guy, Mr. Rodrigues way back when I was in H.S. He's always been weird, cruising the rural areas of San Juan and Aromas, we would see him parked alone on dirt roads leading to nowhere. Always wondered what he was up to, but wouldn't be surprised if he is guilty of the rape charges. Always seemed unprofessional and too flirtatious to work for the Sheriff's dept. back in the 80's. It's too bad it took this long to figure this guy out.

  6. Rodrigues finally convicted of his crimes against women and society.
