SEASIDE HOMICIDE VICTIM STRANGLED
Husband in custody in hospital
Monterey County Herald, CA

11/04/2008
[Excerpt] With a 53-year-old Seaside woman dead of strangulation and her 60-year-old husband a prime suspect in her death, friends of the couple struggled to comprehend what could have happened on that fateful Halloween morning last week. Maria Christina "Cherry" Gibson was found slain Friday in the Del Rey Chateaux apartment she shared with her husband Dan Gibson, a state prison counselor... Seaside police responded to a report of a man lying on the ground at the complex, in the 1000 block of Highland Street, and found Dan Gibson, who had apparently either fallen or jumped from the balcony of his third-floor apartment. Police checked the apartment and found Maria Gibson dead. Dan Gibson was transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, then flown to a San Jose-area hospital for treatment of a head injury and several broken bones, including a fractured hip. Gibson remains in the hospital, where he is in custody and heavily sedated, police said... A member of the Garden Health & Fitness club on Garden Road, Gibson was described as a large, "well-built" man who is into weightlifting and is generally easygoing and very popular. By contrast, Maria Gibson was a relatively slight woman... [Club spokeswoman Erica] Ansberry said club employees were shocked by reports of the incident, especially since Gibson was known for always being in a good mood. She said she'd never seen Gibson's late wife at the club, and was unaware he was married. Dan Pherigo, spokesman for the Soledad Correctional Training Facility, said Gibson has worked at the state prison since 1990. Pherigo said Gibson was promoted to counselor at the facility a decade ago. Gibson reportedly worked in the so-called "X" wing of the facility, evaluating prisoners with more severe behavioral issues. The prison, which houses nearly 7,000 inmates at last count, is a facility built for about 3,300, has been severely overcrowded for years and was the site of several riots this summer. While friends acknowledged that Gibson's job is stressful, they said he seemed to handle it well [Full article here]

[Excerpt] Prosecutors have charged a Soledad correctional counselor with murder in the strangulation of his wife. Dan Gibson, 60, remains hospitalized with injuries sustained when he jumped or fell from his third-story Seaside apartment early Halloween, which led police to discover his wife's body in the residence. Authorities later determined Maria Christina "Cherry" Gibson, who worked as a hostess at the Gallery restaurant at the Lodge at Pebble Beach, was strangled. In an e-mail Thursday, co-worker David Rankin said Cherry Gibson, 53, was a cheerful person who lit up the room with her smile. "She was the first smiling face people saw when they arrived and the last smiling face when they left," he said. "She will be dearly missed by those who knew her"... Cherry Gibson had injuries, though police are unsure when they occurred, said Vernon. [Full article here]
