An Easton firefighter was arrested Friday after a child custody exchange in a supermarket parking lot turned violent. Police responded to the Shaw’s Supermarket on Depot Drive at about 5 p.m. and found the wife of James Walsh suffering from a laceration on her leg. According to witnesses, the woman became trapped between her car and Walsh’s pickup truck while the two had a dispute over the couple’s two young daughters seated in the back of the truck. With the passenger door open and the truck moving slowly, the woman was snagged on the track. Walsh, 51, then stepped from the cab, walked around the truck and pushed his wife, causing her to fall to the ground, witnesses said. The woman initially refused treatment at the scene over concerns that emergency responders would be sympathetic to Walsh because he is a firefighter. She was later taken to Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton to treat her ankle while the children were watched by medical professionals. Walsh, who was at the scene during the investigation, was arrested and charged with assault and battery. He was arraigned in Taunton District Court Monday. Judge Stephen Ostrach released him on $60 bail and scheduled an Oct. 5 pre-trial hearing. [LINK]
