A New Orleans Police Department officer was jailed and suspended Friday night after being accused of showing up at the post office where his wife works and attacking her. Tristan I. Carter, 27, a two-year veteran of the 1st District, was booked with counts of simple assault, criminal trespassing and domestic abuse battery, Orleans Parish Criminal District Court records showed. He had posted $5,000 bail for his release by Saturday. Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas announced that he had suspended Carter without pay for the duration of a Public Integrity Bureau investigation in a press release Saturday. NOPD civilian spokesman Bob Young said the attack happened about 6:30 p.m. at the U.S. Post Office at 1300 Florida Ave. Few other details about the attack were available. In the press release, officials only said Carter threatened his wife, threatened an acquaintance of hers and trespassed government property. Carter allegedly battered his wife before he was handcuffed and taken to jail. According to court records, a magistrate judge on Saturday determined that there was no probable cause for the trespassing count but placed Carter under a restraining order forbidding him from contact with his wife. The judge ordered Carter to return for another hearing July 13. [LINK]

  1. I am very happy to see that the new chief of police took immediate action. In the past, these cases went uninvestigated and often times, if there was an investigation, no disciplinary action followed. It appears Ronal Serpas is going to do a very good job of cleaning house!
