ELLWOOD CITY OFFICER CHARGED WITH ANIMAL ABUSE
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
By Rick Wills
November 6, 2010
[Excerpts] ...Authorities this week charged Eric John Squicquero, 37, of Ellwood City with several counts of animal cruelty. Officials in White Township suspended him from his job as a police officer, said Chief Don Lutz, who described Squicquero as a "reliable and dependable" officer. Township officials said they received phone calls from animal rights groups who plan to protest on Monday at the township office and in front of supervisors' homes... Squicquero previously worked as a police officer in Stowe, Shenango and Hickory. "His future employment here would really depend on the final outcome of the charges against him. If he is convicted of a misdemeanor 2 or above, then he cannot work as a police officer," Lutz said... After a Wednesday arraignment, he was released on $50,000 bond by Ellwood City District Judge Jerry Cartwright Jr. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 30... Police said Eric Squicquero kept food and water for the dogs in the kitchen, where the dogs could not reach them. "If you don't want to care for an animal, all you have to do is call Animal Control," said Ellwood City police Lt. David Kingston. [Full article here]

  1. simple signs that help is needed! if a person can knowingly let life dwindle away like that is it a cry for help..i wish departmentmental heads can take action on their brothers in blue to help them help themselves. I strongly believe this would make for a better cop and better relationships. People would not have to go to extreme to prove a point but get help before hand. i BELEIVE MY SISTER NANCY ROJO WOULD STILL BE ALIVE TODAY IF BROTHERS HELPED BROTHERS IN A POSITIVE WAY NOT ENABLING WAY!

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY SISTER NANCY ROJO!
SHAME ON ENABLES OF THE BADGE!

  2. Jeanette, that is so powerful and true.

    Hugs. Keep speaking out.

I also shudder when I see "she went back to the house to get some belongings." How many articles about domestic murder contain that sentence?

This wife, and this cop can't get much closer to death than they are right now.

Sometimes people, co-workers, friends, whoever -- back up and hope for the best.

    That is not a plan.

  3. Hi,I am the former step daughter of Eric. My mom sister and I lived with him for about 10 years. we just left this august due to his abusive behavior mentally, and physically towards my mom. After we left everything went crazy. Esp this past few weeks. He stalked my mom at her boyfriend's he would look in the guy's window at night or pull into his drive way and sit across the street and spy on them. Then on Monday my mom found the dogs. This is unreal everything that happened. And he told her that "she should have stayed." He knew how much my mom loved those dogs and he did this to punish her. I do worry about my mom everyday now. because you have no clue what he could do to her. I need my mom. she means the world to me and i am happy to see this site. because youre right. he did know what he was doing he just didnt care and now he could possibly kill my mom. she needs protected and hopefully she gets it.

  4. Please feel free to email me here. If I can help connect you to any support I'd love to do that. I am so sorry you are going through this - as well as your mom. It's a horrifying story for us who don't even know your family - so how much more horrible for your family. There are things to do to help be safer.
    MUCH LOVE,

  6. The dogs too, that's pathetic. Those are signs of a true sociopath.

  7. Yes, Squicquero obviously needs help but he is not HELPLESS like those poor dogs were. He's able to reach out for help, unlike those poor dogs unable to reach even a water bowl. How long they had to suffer to get to the point of death and near death. No food, no water, no fresh air or grass beneath their feet. No pats on the head or kind words. If this man can do that to an INNOCENT and helpless animal, he is most def capable harming a his ex wife. THIS NEEDS TO STOP!

  8. Stop how? It's an animal charge and he is going to be on the streets whether he loses his job or not.

  9. @ the first anonymous (former step daughter), I know how you feel about needing your mom. That's exactly how I was with my mother. She was my best friend, we did literally everything together. And now, due to my father, I no longer have her. He took my best friend away and decided to take his own life. So I can honestly say "I know what you're going through". I've been through it. Keep your head up and make the best of things.

and @ aunt JEANETTE, I agree. If someone would have stepped in and helped their "brother in blue", things might have ended differently.

  12. Police Officer In Court On Animal Cruelty Charges
    November 30, 2010 5:20 PM

ELLWOOD CITY (KDKA) – A police officer was in court Tuesday facing cruelty to animals charges.

Not only was he in court, so were local animal rights advocates.

Eric Squicquero has been suspended from his job as a White Township, Beaver County police officer. He had nothing to say Tuesday morning after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing, which sends his case directly to court.

He’s charged with animal cruelty after Animal Control officers were called to his Ellwood City, Lawrence County home. They found a malnourished Rottweiler. The dog weighed just 57 pounds, which once weighed 100 pounds. They also found a smaller mixed-breed dog dead.

The dog’s food and water bowls were kept where the dogs couldn’t reach them, according to investigators.

Squicquero told investigators he couldn’t care for the dogs because he works 12 hours a day.

“We’ve waived that opportunity and we’re going to deal with the facts of this case in the appropriate forum at the appropriate time,” Defense Attorney Philip Berezniak said.

“We did read where he had said one of the problems was he was working so many hours. I don’t have any comment on the defense at this point. Those facts will come out as this case moves through the courts.”

Animal rights advocates came to the hearing and were disturbed by this case.

“For a police officer to intentionally starve two dogs, or the one has passed and the one was within a breath of life, I think that he’s suspended with no pay and that was justifiable,” Patricia Chenet said.

Animal rights groups said will they will follow this process closely as it moves through the court system.

  13. Does anyone know the outcome of his trial?
My re-posting the news on this this person cost me my job and certification with that department. But I would not work for a chief of police that condones violence on animals and supports a killer.

  14. I am so sorry you lost your job behind that. Is that legal? I looked up the case and don't see anything new posted.

  15. well he's still working for the dept. he was just the officer that came to a call i had made.. i was curious about him & researched it & found all thisss!!!! insane!!! other than that i just know he is still working for white township.

  16. Eric pleaded guilty to the charges on 11/14/11 and lost his badge. He can no longer be a police officer in the state of PA

  18. I tried to find something in the news... I'm glad that there was some accountability, but as you know there is no winning in this. When someone is bitter there is tension in the air. It's hard to adjust to living in a world with an enemy. Be wise - applying what you know, and try to stay safe.

    1. Daughter or not you don't know what he did when you weren't with him. About the dogs - read the newspaper about who is responsible for the dogs condition.

    2. Daughter or not, just covering for an abuser!! NOT ONE THING stopped him from taking a minute or two to check to be sure that these animals had food/water within reach for them to have each day!! You CANNOT disguise outright malice displayed by this man. Know about men like this, and have nothing but CONTEMPT for them.

    3. well said! i wish you and your mother all the best all the way from the UK (scotland). I cried reading this story, as an officer of the law he should have known better! over here, we dont take too kindly to animal abusers/wife beaters/child molesters they are all in the same category in my eyes and should be dealt with accordingly!

    1. Why not? Is it because there is some truth behind this? A question if I was to showed this person who is being wrongly accused for this. Would this website get shut down? Are you actually the office who was at the scene?

  23. Im glad you can read. Then you should know why I can't post your first post. Cop hating means disliking them all because of what some do. If there is a post against all police in the comments please point that out and I will remove it.
