[Excerpts] A veteran Pittsburgh police officer who participated in a department program to strengthen families by improving communication has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend after they fought over a cell phone and a letter. Dwayne Ausbrooks, 48, was arrested Saturday and charged with simple assault... [Girlfriend TK] told police that Ausbrooks pulled the car over at Frankstown Avenue and Wheeler Street, and he "jumped from the driver seat and attacked me." She said he jumped on top of her and refused to get off. She said she fled from his car... According to the report, police officers observed that the woman was "visibly shaken" and had injuries to her hand and upper lip. Earlier this year, Ausbrooks was one of the police officers involved in the G.R.E.A.T. Family Program, a six-week community educational effort at the YMCA Homewood/Brushton branch. At the time Ausbrooks told a reporter, "This is about families strengthening families and ultimately strengthening the community"... A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 30...     [Excerpts] ...Police picked up [Pittsburgh Police Officer Dwayne] Ausbrooks and allowed him to change out of his uniform before taking him to the Allegheny County Jail. "A lot of people in prisons don't like police officers," District Attorney Stephen Zappala said, adding that the officers followed protocol. The arresting officers brought Ausbrooks back to his East Liberty apartment - which he shares with the girlfriend - so he could change into civilian clothes. "We have a protocol with the prison when an officer is arrested - how they're handled down there -- so, no, that's not extraordinary"...

    [Excerpts] ...[Ausbrooks] has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome of an investigation and also was ordered to relinquish his service weapon... Ms. [TK] sought an emergency protection-from-abuse order Friday night and followed up Monday with the court, which granted an extension until a Dec. 1 hearing. Ms. [TK] successfully petitioned Common Pleas Court Judge Susan Evashavik DiLucente to order that any guns, ammunition or firearms licenses in Mr. Ausbrooks' possession be confiscated... [Allegedly Ausbrook] jumped on Ms. [TK] and pressed down so hard she could not breathe... He then bent her fingers and arm back, she told police... Officers arrested Mr. Ausbrooks while he was working a moonlighting job... Mr. Ausbrooks faces a preliminary hearing at 12:30 p.m. next Tuesday. He is normally assigned as a youth officer but has been reassigned to the warrant office for now...
