Dispute leads to deputy’s arrest

BRAWLEY — An Imperial County sheriff’s deputy was arrested on suspicion of pushing his fiancée during a heated argument Monday night, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The deputy, identified as 27-year-old Joel Gonzalez, was booked into the county jail on suspicion of spousal battery and false imprisonment. Gonzalez, who reportedly worked as a correctional officer and was becoming a deputy, posted bail the same night he was arrested by Brawley police. Clerks at the county jail were unable to ascertain how much Gonzalez’s bail was. Police received a 6:58 p.m. call from Gonzalez’s 36-year-old fiancée... Gonzalez’s arrest on the count of false imprisonment stemmed from his alleged effort to keep his fiancée from leaving the bathroom during their argument... No weapons were used as the unspecified quarrel escalated into a pushing match, the sergeant said. Monita said it doesn’t appear there were any past domestic violence calls to Gonzalez’s home... A source familiar with Gonzalez said it was uncertain whether he was placed on suspension or administrative leave. Gonzalez hasn’t worked for the Sheriff’s Office for long, the source said.
