A family dispute turned deadly Tuesday afternoon, and an off-duty sheriff’s deputy turned into a hero. It started in the 800 block of West Martin Luther King Boulevard in the city of Washington. According to Washington County Chief Deputy Brian Hardison, Cpl. Gary Blunt got into an argument with his step father. Hardison says the step father produced a handgun and pointed it a Blunt’s wife. He says Blunt jumped in front of his wife to protect her, just before the stepfather fired three times. Two bullets hit Blunt, one in the torso and the other in the shoulder. Emergency workers took him to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Hardison tells 9 On Your Side doctors expect Blunt to be okay. Blunt’s step father, however, is dead. Hardison says Washington Police confronted him shortly after the shooting. The man turned the gun on himself and died at the scene. [LINK]
