A Park Ridge police captain has been placed on administrative leave amid stalking and terroristic threat charges, police said. Craig Coughlin, 39, was arrested May 18 after his girlfriend filed charges against him. Municipal Judge Dennis Lahiff found probable cause to issue a complaint against Coughlin, Chief Joseph Madden said today. Coughlin was released on his own recognizance without having to post bail. '"There's an ongoing investigation going on.

"I don't want to comment any more." The captain has been on leave from his $113,000-per-year job since his arrest, Madden said. Coughlin joined the Park Ridge Police Department in Feb. 1994. He was promoted to captain in Nov. 2007. "He has received numerous commendations… for excellent police work during his career," Madden said. When asked if there had been any disciplinary action taken against Coughlin, he said he could not comment on internal affairs. Because the charges involve an indictable offense, the case has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. "Screening will review whether to retain it as a criminal file or whether to remand it back" to Park Ridge, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said. If convicted of the terroristic threats charge, Coughlin faces losing his job and three to five years in prison, Molinelli said. A court date has not yet been set. . [LINK]
