A Memphis Police Officer is accused of killing a woman with whom he had an affair. Now her family breaks its silence. 31-year-old Phyllis Malone was shot and killed Tuesday. Her body was found slumped at the wheel of her car in a gas station. Memphis cop Chancy Jones admitted he pulled the trigger. He's been charged with second-degree murder. The victim's family wonders why it wasn't first-degree. Police say the sexual relationship between Malone and Jones began just weeks ago. Malone's sister, Ophelia Harris, says it goes back months. She says her sister met Officer Jones in June after police showed up for a domestic dispute. "He was one of the officers on the scene and she met him there," said Harris. She says Malone didn't talk much about their relationship. "She never said anything bad about him, never, I never heard it," said Harris. Never heard about any problems, and certainly never imagined it would end abruptly in a parking lot. Harris says the 31-year-old had just talked to Officer Jones over the phone Friday. "He shot my sister," said Harris. "He left her there and went back to whatever else he was doing." The family can't fathom why someone who takes on the responsiblity of wearing a badge, would take the life of this mother, take her away from her five children. "This a police officer, their job is to protect and serve, who he protecting? His marriage?" said Malone's brother, Tyrone Harris. Jones, a married man, has been on the police force for three years. Malone's brother says even though he's a cop, he should be treated just like everyone else. He says second-degree murder simply isn't good enough. "I don't want them to look at it as she's just another statistic and he's a police officer, I want them to give her the justice she deserves," said Ophelia Harris. Jones is locked up at the CJC. His bond hearing is set for Monday. Funeral arrangements for Malone are still pending. [LINK]
