ELYRIA — An Elyria police officer arrested on a domestic violence charge that ultimately was dropped by his wife won’t be punished by the department.
Police Chief Mike Medders said Patrolman Scott Willis returned to road patrol duties on Tuesday, the same day the administrative investigation against him showed no wrongdoing.
Medders said police investigators interviewed Willis’ wife, Wendy Willis, who told them that she had been the aggressor in the Sept. 29 incident at the couple’s Chester Township home in Geauga County.
“His wife said she struck him first,” Medders said.
Wendy Willis called police and told officers who arrived at the scene that a verbal argument between her and her husband had turned physical and that Scott Willis had pushed and hit her. An officer observed bruises on her body, and Scott Willis was arrested.
Prosecutors in Chardon Municipal Court ultimately dropped the criminal charge in November, and Willis had to pay $107.64 in court costs, according to court records.
Willis, who joined the department in 1990, had been assigned to desk duty while he was facing the criminal charges and during the administrative investigation.
