Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy Ordered To Stand Trial
Thomas Hutchins Accused Of Shooting Girlfriend, 12-Year-Old Girl

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department deputy accused of shooting two people, including a 12-year-old, was ordered to stand trial on Friday. Deputy Thomas Hutchins was off-duty last week when police said he shot his girlfriend in the face and then shot a 12-year-old girl at the house where his girlfriend ran for help. According to the criminal complaint, Hutchins told police he fired at his girlfriend in self-defense after she hit him with a candlestick during an argument. But that wouldn't explain why he then is accused of following her to a nearby apartment and firing through the door where she ran for safety, 12 News reporter Nick Bohr said. That door was riddled with bullet holes and the victim's blood. The gunfire penetrated the steel door and struck a 12-year-old girl in the hand and leg, police said. The girlfriend -- still trying to flee the deputy -- jumped out of an upstairs window to the pavement below and continued to run through a number of yards before getting help from another neighbor. Both victims are recovering from their injuries. In court on Friday, Hutchins conceded prosecutors have enough evidence for a trial and one was ordered. The date hasn't been set yet. Hutchins remains in custody on $150,000 bail. He is suspended without pay from the sheriff's department. Hutchins is being held at the Waukesha County Jail because he has recently worked at the Milwaukee County Jail. [LINK]
