[MN] The "unsupervised probation" behavior of wife-assaulting St. Paul Police Officer Scott Wendell
Last month St. Paul Police Officer Scott Wendell - accused of slamming a handcuffed man's head into a jail cell wall, was found not guilty in May. Wendell denied physically attacking jailed 28-year old Luke Prescott - a friend of Officer Wendell's 17-year old stepdaughter who WENDELL says was providing meth to her. Long story short - off-duty Officer Wendell went to the jail and into the cell where Prescott was. Wendell says that Prescott was bent over at the waist and shoeless on the slippery floor when Wendell went to spin him around, and that Prescott fell and hit his head on the metal door jamb - THAT'S where all the blood and need for stitches came from. One officer testified seeing Wendell slam Prescott into a wall and another officer testified hearing screams and seeing the pool of blood on the floor. The cell was cleaned up and not preserved for evidence. Ramsey County District Judge Gary Bastian didn't believe Prescott and sided with Officer Wendell, saying that it hadn't been proven to the court (himself) that Wendell's INTENT was to harm Prescott. While under investigation for the attack on Prescott, Wendell was on unsupervised probation in Anoka County for domestic assault of his wife. Wendell pleaded not guilty to the domestic assault charge and it was "continued for dismissal" as long as he didn't commit assault, abusive behavior, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct, etc. His probation ended July 2009.
