POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR KILLING WIFE, FAMILY REACTS

It's been two months since Charlotte Barbour lost her 24-year-old daughter Shari Cartmell.

Police believe Shari was shot and killed by her husband, Deon Cartmell, who was a Metro officer at the time.

Barbour said, "It's settling in with me and her sister and the rest of my family that Shari's gone and that justice is going to be served."

Investigators said Shari was shot in the head inside the home she shared with her husband on the afternoon of March 16.

The Police Department decommissioned Deon Cartmell after the shooting, while they investigated.

This week, a grand jury indicted Cartmell charging him with first-degree murder.

Metro detectives arrested him Friday night.

Shari's family dismissed early speculation that she may have killed herself.

At a visitation for Shari in March, family members told News 2 they suspected Deon Cartmell's involvement.

The family has now hired an attorney and is not commenting on the specifics of the case, but Barbour is grateful to investigators, "for stepping up to the plate and investigating."

Barbour is still coming to terms with the fact that her youngest daughter is gone, and so are those who knew her.

This month, colleagues at Skyline Medical Center where Shari worked as an ER Registrar, remembered her in their newsletter.

Barbour says she is hopeful now there will be justice for Shari.

She added, "Trust God that the truth will come out. Trust God."

Deon Cartmell is being held in the Metro Jail on $300,000 bond.

Family members say there's a tree planted for Shari at Hunters Lane high School where she graduated.

A small ceremony is scheduled for Monday afternoon. [LINK]

NASHVILLE POLICE OFFICER INDICTED IN WIFE'S DEATH

May 29, 2010

Metro Police officer Deon Cartmell was arrested Friday after he was indicted in the death of his wife.

Cartmell, 23, had said that his wife, Shari, 24, shot herself while the two were sitting on the living room couch on March 16 in their home on Saunders Avenue in Madison.

An investigation by Metro detectives Charles Robinson and Norris Tarkington found that Cartmell's account of his wife's death did not match the evidence, according to a police news release.

The gun used in the shooting was owned by Deon Cartmell and was not his service weapon.

Cartmell had been a police officer in the East Precinct for less than a year at the time of his wife's death. He graduated from the police academy in July 2009 and was decommissioned on March 17.

He has been placed on administrative assignment and was in jail Friday night. [LINK]

I'm sorry it's hard for you, but don't take it out on the victim's family. Nobody cares right now if he ever helped an old lady across the street or what his favorite color is.

  4. Deon followed me in going in the Marine Corps, I went to school with both of them, and church too. She was a sweet girl, and he was a young gentleman. A sad situation on both ends!

  9. Erica, as far as I know no one has validated the info that he is able to move around. Unless you know that, please don't upset yourself too much. Hopefully it's not even true.
